Remarketing and Custom Audiences in Facebook

You know what remarketing is by now. Hopefully our graphic above is a good review (If you need a stronger refresher check out some of our earlier posts on it here and here). Remarketing in Facebook allows you to tailor your advertisements specifically for the audience you’re trying to reach. Rather than having your ads re-appear on other sites, they will appear on individuals Facebook pages. Facebook offers the ability to create a “custom audience” using certain snippets of code on pieces of your website. You can create several custom audiences to accomplish different goals with your remarketing efforts. On top of this, you can create what Facebook calls “Lookalike” audiences to catch other people who haven’t necessarily visited your site, but are highly likely to do so based on the custom audiences you created.   The logistics of implementing and tracking can be difficult to understand if you aren’t already familiar with coding and analytics. We’ll spare you our agency jargon and direct you to this extremely well written and informational post by Jon Loomer. Remarketing, remarketing, remarketing – some of us have been successfully implementing this brilliant marketing strategy for years, and suddenly the rest of the world seems to be waking up. 2. “Content is King” will continue to rule the SEO and Marketing kingdom. It’s not just a trendy, overused reference like #disruption was in 2015: everything was “disrupted” and there was total chaos everywhere (no, not really). Quality of content will be rewarded: as relevance and quality of content continue to convert, content marketing will continue evolving throughout 2016. 3. Social Media joins the big leagues, driving influencers and engagement opportunities. This is a pretty exciting stuff.  Google FINALLY rolled out the new Google My Business platform.  From Internet marketing industry folks like myself, this update has been long speculated and very much appreciated. Several experts have provided excellent coverage already (thanks, DannySullivan and Mike Blumenthal). Exact Instructions For 100% Completion: The greatest update for small business owners is the Business Information Progress Bar. Most of us in the Local SEO niche know exactly what to fill out, but the majority of business owners have no idea how to properly optimize their listing. Google knew that this was a huge point of confusion, so they added the new Progress Bar and included detailed call-outs to help business owners complete their profiles. All you have to do is mouse over the progress bar, and your specific action items are displayed below in the graphic.              The Google My Business update is the biggest merchant-facing update Google has ever released for local businesses.  It’s the first time we’ve had a single, forward-facing brand business owners in several years, and Google has worked hard to clear up the massive confusion that was felt in the past. This is a big, huge change.  Google is trying to streamline and make more coherent the process of managing local business data, reviews and social interactions across it’s many sites.  Google calls it “a free and easy way to find and connect with your people, wherever you are” The company says that existing Google Places and Google+ Pages users will be “automatically upgraded to Google My Business.” Google offers FAQs about the new approach and its features, which all seem to have pre-existed. Simplification is the upgrade here. In many ways this is the integrated product suite anticipated by a 2012 Wall Street Journal article asserting that Google was trying to consolidate and simplify several local-SMB marketing products under a single banner. Double Your Social Media Content

As the social media director here at Idyllwild Advertising, I know that social media is important.  I live, breathe, and eat social media on my phone, desktop in my office and all around me.  Too often, doing social media can become a pain and very time consuming.  But we all know, deep down inside, that social media is important.  And if we are running a business, we know that we have to do it.  So we might as well figure out how to do more social media in less time and with less effort. I have come up with a few techniques that have worked well for me and for my clients, and have been proven to produce twice the amount of social media with only half of the effort. In my mind, and as a social media director, higher output on social media generally produces a greater level of engagement, and ENGAGEMENT is key with your followers. Engage your followers. Now, when I talk about engagement, I don’t mean simply “favorite” a specific tweet, or a “like” on a specific Facebook or Instagram post/photo. I’m talking about responding to specific questions, talking to your followers, really and truly ENGAGING them in conversation on your different social media accounts.  The brands that do this and that do it well, have a very loyal following.  Any time I have an issue with a product or something I have purchased from a name brand, I immediately go to twitter and post my question and concern.  I usually have a response fairly quickly.  Practice this and start engaging your followers more and you will see a significant bump in your followers. 2.  Collect as you go.   One of the most important features of posting to social media is also the most time-consuming — finding content to post. Vertical Response has found that the single-most time-consuming factor in social media management is “finding & posting content.” Create a collection system for content. The system you choose is totally up to you, but let me provide a suggestion. I use Evernote along with the Evernote Chrome extension. In my Evernote folder, I can create a specific folder for things I want to collect and share later.  3.  Share it more than once. Here’s the ultimate hack for less-effort/more-content. Share the same stuff more than once. There’s logic to back up this simple technique. Different people will see your different social media posts, depending on what time you post it. Joe checks his Twitter feed at 8am, but Marie doesn’t check her Twitter feed until her lunch break at 12:30. Joe’s going to see your morning tweet, but maybe not your noon tweet. So why not share the same thing twice? Or why not three times? Or more? Can you get away with this? Absolutely, and there’s nothing cheap about it at all. Garrett Moon discussed how he recycles his posts, and even shows his schedule for doing it. Moon has had zero complaints, higher interaction, more output, and even the possibility that some of the reshared content could go viral after several takes. If you share your content more than once, you can get three or four times as much mileage from a single post than you would if you were only to post it once. Obviously, you’d need to jigger it a few times to make it unique each time, but the overall principle is incredibly effort-saving and traffic-increasing. Conclusion Increasing your output, engaging your followers, creating a schedule and resharing content, will reduce your time and effort on Social Media. We’ve been a little busy trying to get our growing team organized to share too much about it, but, we are excited to start bragging now! Here is the article by Michelle discussing her thoughts and experience from starting and keeping Idyllwild in business: Women In Business Feature Enjoy a great homegrown, hardworking, fun success story? Read on… Let’s start with “What’s it like owning a successful digital marketing agency as a WOMAN in Utah (a.k.a. “Silicon Slopes”) surrounded by Utah’s special brand of ping-pong-foosball-playing-Boys Clubs?” Yep, I said it. It’s a hell of a lot of real work, but so much fun! If you really care about your clients, professional performance, truly love and “get” marketing; online is a never-ending golden road of opportunity. That’s the way I saw it in 2007. Still do. Successfully guiding my clients through this very important journey and fundamental transformation in media consumption has been a tremendous experience. We learn and improve together, through this ever-changing digital world. Growing this company with my own hands – learning, absorbing, adapting – has been more valuable than any classroom professor could have possibly provided. Many times after establishing a relationship with a new client I’ll often hear: “What do people do if they don’t have one of you?” I laugh for a second, then tell them some people may “Head to the ringer for a while; get left behind; and unfortunately, lose opportunity and profitability.” There are so many moving pieces in today’s marketing landscape. To keep up, you either need killer internal teams or an agency with really talented, organized, dedicated peeps. And in many cases, both (depending on size and goals). The challenge these days, is there are a ton of digital companies (hacks) out there who promise gazillions of impressions, etc., but only a handful of awesome, talented, put-your-money-where-your-mouth-is agencies (like us) to go around. We get to know our clients, their business objectives, and cut through the clutter – showing ‘real’ performance metrics. Nothing we do is on “auto-pilot” because success doesn’t work that way. So, when you find a creative, capable, accessible, digital agency who understands your business and makes your goals a priority – keep them. There are no perfect answers – there are so many channels and things are constantly changing. Everyone seems to have an off-the-shelf solution to sell you (automate your PR? What?); design your logo for free; ‘make partnership with you’ for your website design…it gets exhausting. ‘New’ marketing opportunities are everywhere. How are you supposed to stay on top of it all? Business owners need someone or some team, committed to figuring it out and making sense of it as it pertains to their business. It really is a big, tough, roller-coaster (yet ridiculously rewarding) job, but I’ve been successfully at it for 8 years now. Ask anyone, it’s my baby. I think companies like IDYllwild set a bit of a standard. It’s like going to dinner at Ruth’s Chris as opposed to Denny’s: Everyone wants dinner. Everyone needs dinner. It comes down to “How do you want it served? On-time, messy, distasteful, un-sourced?” You really do get what you pay for. For years we have nurtured our unique business philosophy (at times, to our own peril), but I wouldn’t change a thing. I‘m sincerely happy when my clients are happy. The journey has been exciting, risky, sad, hysterical, educational, successful, and rewarding. I’ve grown so much from it, and highly recommend it to anyone with marketing talent and digital savviness. In the past eight years, I have grown teams and lost important players (never the core members, though), and rebuilt teams – better teams. We take a different approach to “digital agency.” We believe having a digital presence is the cornerstone for all marketing efforts – and that it’s vital for all marketing pieces to sync into one big marketing package with a big bow.   Pretty great, huh?
