Feeling burnt out? 3 ways to bring the spark back to your business

Feeling burnt out? 3 ways to bring the spark back to your business

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Confession: I used to be extremely critical of burnout. I would come across posts on the topic when I first started Elle & Company and thought the writers were being a tad bit overdramatic. If you’re doing what you love, can you really ever become burnt out? It was at a time in my business where I had a ton of motivation. I had a clear goal that I was working toward - creating a full-time business off of my love of design - and I was willing to work 10+ hours a day to get there. The momentum continued to increase as I saw some success in my business. Clients started to come rolling in, my blog was growing exponentially, and I started to offer more products and services. I hit my stride… ...and then recently, I hit a wall. The early mornings, late nights, and no vacations finally caught up with me. That was a month or two ago. Since then I’ve realized that burnout is a real thing.  And after some reflection and time off, I’ve discovered 3 simple things that can help you conquer burnout and bring some spark back to your business.

Not only is his business model ingenious but he can basically run his 7 figure ecommerce company with just a handful of employees because of all of the automation that he has developed. What’s also cool is that he has encouraged and raised his son to be a seasoned entrepreneur as well which something that I plan on doing with my kids. In fact, I really wanted his son on the show today, but Jason told me that I had to interview him first. ...

15 Clever Ways to Use Instagram Stories to Promote Your Business

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

I don't know about you, but when Instagram stories launched several months ago, I was both excited and overwhelmed. I was excited at the idea of a new way to connect with my followers.  But overwhelmed by the though of having to create more content on top of regular Instagram posts, Facebook, Twitter, blog posts, and all the other content that I create week after week for Elle & Company. So I kind of sat on it and put it off until I could put my own unique spin on it, until I could figure out how I could really use Instagram stories to benefit my business, and how I could use Instagram stories realistically. I didn't want to start off with a bang, with all these bright ideas and then not have the time to actually follow through with them all.      I sat on it for a while and then started coming up with a list of clever content ideas. So today I'm going to share 15 clever content ideas to use Instgaram stories to promote your business.

11 Crafty Ways to Repurpose Old Content

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Content creation is at the heart of Elle & Company.  Between blog posts, weekly newsletters, Ellechats, social media posts, and Library additions, I spend a lot of time pumping out new content each week. But here’s the thing about new content: it has a shelf life. Newsletters get buried in inboxes. Blog posts get buried in archives. Social media posts quickly fade away from the feeds of your followers. Webinars end.  The content you create (along with the time and energy you put into them) quickly gets buried under your newer content. But don’t be fooled; you didn’t labor in vain!  Enter, the art of repurposing content.

The eventual success of your online store will depend on several factors. Probably the single most important factor will be where and how you are indexed in the various search engines. I've compiled below a comprehensive list of items that your online store should focus on to obtain the best rankings possible. In my experience, most online stores do not follow all of the rules shown below. Implementing these 10 little SEO techniques on your own online store should give you an advantage over the competition. Make Sure All of Your Internal Links Point to the Same Domain By the same domain, I'm referring to whether you want your site to be known as http://www.yourstore.com or http://yourstore.com This is important because the search engines actually treat both urls as different sites. If you allow the search engines to index both versions of your site, you will be effectively diluting your page rankings. The Story Behind Why I Started Elle & Company

The Story Behind Why I Started Elle & Company

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

“How did you get your business off the ground?” It’s a question I get asked pretty regularly by creatives who are in the beginning stages of starting their business.  They want to know how I grew my audience, how I was able to book clients, and how I made the leap to full-time.  I have to smile as I attempt to answer it, because the irony of it all is that I never set out to start a business. As a matter of fact, I swore up and down that I would never, ever own a business, because I grew up seeing firsthand all the things a business required. (For those of you who’ve heard this story, you haven’t heard the whole story. Keep reading.)

Giving incredible speeches all across the country is lucrative but it is not scalable because you have to physically be there. And after having kids, Grant realized that he wanted to scale back the travelling to spend more time with family. An Inside Look at What We're Currently Working On

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

This isn’t a normal Elle & Company blog post.   In a normal Elle & Company blog post, I share strategies and write about topics after I’ve already had time to experiment and figure out what works.   But after reading your replies to my annual survey a month or two ago, I saw that you want to see things as they’re happening. You requested more behind-the-scenes.    Your wish is my command.   I have to admit, though - this is a little out of my comfort zone. Because if something doesn’t work out the way I hope it will, my failure will be public knowledge. All of you will know about it.    But that’s a more honest look at running a business, isn’t it? Trial and error, falling down once, and getting up twice.   So here’s the inside scoop about what my team and I are focusing on this quarter, along with why and how we plan to accomplish it.

6 Practical Ways to Gain More Confidence In Your Work

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

“I have written 11 books but each time I think 'Uh-oh, they're going to find out now’… I've run a game on everybody, and they're going to find me out." You might be surprised to learn, like I was, that Maya Angelou - a woman who was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, won five Grammys, and received a ton of other awards during her lifetime - struggled with “imposter syndrome.”  Her fear of not being good enough caused her to question her abilities and fear that others would learn that she wasn’t as great or as capable as they originally thought.  I wonder if you feel the same way with your business. You feel the pressure to keep up appearances. You doubt your abilities. You compare yourself to others who seem to do things better.  And you fear that even though things seem to be going well at the moment, people will eventually find out that you aren’t quite so great as you appear to be on Instagram.  The struggle with imposter syndrome can be crippling. I know from personal experience. But over the past few years, I’ve discovered 6 truths that have helped me gain more confidence in my work. I hope you find them helpful, too.

If I Were Starting My Business from Scratch, This Would Be My Game Plan

If I Were Starting My Business from Scratch, This Would Be My Game Plan

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

So you want to start a business.   You have a ton of motivation and excitement at first, but all of a sudden reality sets in.    There are so many tasks involved, the majority of which you’ve never tackled before. You’re way out of your comfort zone, overwhelmed by all the things that need to get done.    Where do you even begin?   When you’re first starting out, it can be difficult to see the forest through the trees.   When I first started Elle & Company, I found myself piecing together all that I thought needed to get done (forgetting a bunch of steps along the way).    I longed for a step-by-step list of what to conquer and when.   Now, three and a half years into running my online business, I’ve had time to reflect on what worked and what I could’ve done differently to save time (and stress).   So I’m paying it forward. I’ve created a step-by-step list of what to focus on when you’re trying to get your business off the ground.   If I were to go back and start Elle & Company from scratch, here’s what my game plan would look like.

by Steve C @ The My Wife Quit Her Job Podcast

Today I’m thrilled to have a very special guest on the show Pam Cail. Pam is the VP of a company called HYCLogistics and she’s helped thousands of sellers get their goods to their warehouses from Asia. They’ve been in business since 1948 and she knows shipping and logistics inside and out. The reason why I have her on the show today is because many people are intimidated by the importing process. Plus, my wife and I import many times a year by sea and we’ve also been confused by all of the fees that we get nickle and dimed on. We pretty much accept these fees blindly but they do add up. So I’ve invited Pam on the show to hopefully clear up the most scary questions that people have about importing. What You’ll Learn Pam’s motivations for starting her business. The margins for a logistics company and how the ...

Then he realized that the rockstar life was not for him, lost all of his money and had to work his way back up from pretty much ground zero. Today Edmund owns a variety of seven figure companies. Philosophy’s absence from the business world is a crucial mistake. 10 Tips to Tighten Your Copy

10 Tips to Tighten Your Copy

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Whether you’ve been in business for 2 years or 2 minutes, you know that being an entrepreneur requires a slew of skills.  You have to be a salesperson, a marketer, an accountant, a project manager, a designer, a social media expert, a researcher, and a copywriter - all while being an expert in your particular field.  And you’re probably willingly (yet hesitantly) diving into all of those roles because you have a product, service, or idea that you enjoy and believe in. But in order to get clients and customers to pay attention to you and purchase your great product or service, you have to be able to communicate about it. You have to write about it in a way that’s genuine and persuasive. Emails, blog posts, headlines, bios, sales pages, social media updates - being an entrepreneur means you’re constantly having to write new copy for your brand and your business. But here’s the thing: Most of us aren’t trained copywriters.  We haven’t had a copywriting pro sit down with us one-on-one and teach us how to write in a way that’s concise, compelling, and personable. And if you’re anything like me, you might also have some serious resistance to promoting yourself and selling your products.  But copywriting doesn’t have to be quite so painstaking and overwhelming.  These 10 simple copywriting tricks will help you clearly communicate about your business in a way that resonates with people and encourages them to take action.

My Daily Writing Routine (feel free to copy this)

by Jeff Goins @ Goins, Writer

The world doesn’t need another conference. There are enough summits and meet ups and festivals to last a few lifetimes. And we certainly don’t need another writers’ conference. An experience that leaves you changed.

Is The Customer Always Right Just BS? How Would You Handle These Customer Service Dilemmas?

by Steve C @ MyWifeQuitHerJob.com

If you’ve been selling physical products online for any length of time, chances are you’ve hit a few customer service snafus along the way. Even if you run a robust operation, processing large volumes of orders inevitably results in mistakes and situations that are beyond your control. For example, most online stores rely on 3rd party shippers to deliver their products to the end customer. Well what happens when there’s a breakdown with your shipper? When something doesn’t get delivered, is it the shipper’s fault or yours? When a customer makes a complaint, do you trust that they are telling the truth? With the holiday selling season right around the corner, these problems only get amplified. For example… You have to deal with customers wanting to make returns. You have to interact with frustrated people trying to make last minute purchases for their friends and loved ...

The Top 9 Mistakes Of Ecommerce Store Site Design (And How To Fix Them)

by Steve C @ MyWifeQuitHerJob.com

Designing a high converting website is one of the hardest aspects of selling online. Not only do you have to step inside your customer’s brain and speak his or her language but you also have to guide them to the right product and close the sale. After critiquing almost a hundred websites over the course of running my online store course, I’ve discovered that most people make the same fundamental mistakes with their site design. Here are the most common problems and how to fix them. Mistake #1: No One Can Tell What You Sell You should always design your website with the assumption that no one knows who you are or what you sell. In fact, when someone lands on your site for the first time, you have about 5 seconds to educate them or they’ll leave. After all, if they don’t know what your product does, ...

An Inside Look at My Client Onboarding Process

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” - Benjamin Franklin When you think about the client process, images of drafts, revisions, and the finished product may come to mind. And while those are crucial components, there are a lot of steps that need to happen before the client process begins in order for things to run smoothly. I’ve found that the onboarding process sets the stage for the rest of the client project. How you handle inquiries, meetings, contracts, and invoices can make or break the entire process; it sets a precedent. So today I’m inviting you inside of my client onboarding process that’s been tweaked over these last three years.  My hope is that while you may not follow it to a T, you might walk away with a step or two that helps make your client process run smoother.

How to Balance a Full-Time Job and a Part-Time Freelance Business

How to Balance a Full-Time Job and a Part-Time Freelance Business

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Starting a “side-hustle” has grown in popularity over the past few years, and it’s easy to understand why.  Maintaining a full-time job while pursuing a passion project on the side offers the best of both worlds: a steady paycheck and benefits along with the opportunity to make a little extra money doing something you love. And while there’s a lot to gain when starting a side-hustle, there’s also a lot of sacrifice. Here at Elle & Company, we know a thing or two about balancing a full-time job and a “side hustle.” I worked a few different 9-5 jobs while I worked to get my business up and running, and both of my assistants currently work full-time jobs while helping me with Elle & Company part-time. All three of us understand the time and energy that goes into balancing a full-time job and a part-time passion project.  So we rounded up some practical ways that we’ve been able to keep our heads above water and maintain our sanity in the process.

Facebook Ads Vs Google Adwords – Which Ad Platform Is Right For Your Ecommerce Business?

by Steve C @ MyWifeQuitHerJob.com

The hardest part about running your own ecommerce store is driving targeted traffic to your products. Unlike selling on marketplaces like Etsy, Ebay, and Amazon, you are responsible for finding your own customers. If you’ve only ever sold on a marketplace like Amazon, you probably have no idea how to launch a store because you don’t have the skills to advertise. After all, Amazon does most of the work for you and leaves you highly dependent on THEIR traffic. To create a strong ecommerce brand in the long run, you NEED to have your own web presence. You NEED to be in control of your own product messaging. You NEED to own your customer list. But what you probably don’t know is where to start when it comes to generating your own sales.
