Why We Choose “Rotate Indefinitely” When Setting up Paid Search Campaigns

by Jon Stroz @ Digital Caffeine

When you set-up paid search campaigns with Google, Bing, and others, there’s a section during the set-up process which asks you how you want to run your ads. For Google, you’re given the choice between four options: Rotate Evenly Is Your Best Bet For most advertisers going their own way, we would highly suggest going with the third option, to rotate-evenly. This will show your ads for 90 days before declaring the best performing and optimizing your campaigns to show that one more often. Why Do We Ignore That? But at Digital Caffeine, we prefer to choose the last option, to rotate ads indefinitely. This means that for each ad group, Google will show the active ads evenly in search results or within display campaigns. And here’s why we do that: For one of our client’s campaigns, we set the rotation option to “Optimize for Clicks“. For one of the ad groups in the campaign, the above happened over the course of three weeks. One ad was shown 173 times, while the second ad was shown just 21 times. Furthermore, here is the breakdown in time of the two ads over the course of three weeks: Ad 1 Ad 2   You can see by looking at the above timeline charts, Google is quick to make a judgement using minimal data. While the second ad did not have any clicks over the first week, Google pretty much killed it off just 8 days into the campaign running, assuming that since the first ad had 7 clicks during that timeframe, it must be the winner. We certainly always want to show the ad that gives us the best possible chance of having a searcher click on it and even more, […]

Google Warning – Secure HTTPS vs. Non-Secure HTTP – What You Need To Know

by David Stansbury @ Digital Caffeine

Google is sending out notices to owners of websites that do not have secure (HTTPS) pages set up, or security is only partially set up. This is part of Google’s push for a more secure web. As previously forewarned by Google: “Starting October 2017, Chrome (web browser) will show a “NOT SECURE” warning when users enter text in a form on an HTTP (not secure) page.”  Website visitors shown this message will be warned their sensitive information could be stolen by attackers. What Does This Mean To Me? This is important because having a “not secure” warning message on your website can have a chilling effect on your leads and your business. Visitors who see a security warning will become discouraged from completing a purchase, filling out a contact form, signing up for a newsletter, schedule a product demo, etc. How Do I Tell If I’m Affected? Make sure your website is secure (HTTPS) by visiting your website, and look for the green secure lock in your browser address bar. All your page URLs should begin with https:// And not just for form completion or shopping cart checkout pages, but ALL pages should be secure.  Check your home page, other internal pages.  Manually enter your web address in your browser address bar with http: and with https: – what do you see?  If you can visit your website with both secured and non-secured pages, your website is not configured properly.  Every page should be view-able as secured (https), and only as secured.  Visits to non-secured (http) should automatically redirect to the secured (https) version. What Can I Do About It? Contact your webmaster or website hosting service provider to discuss secured pages for your website. […]

Should You Advertise on Your Brand’s Name?

by Jon Stroz @ Digital Caffeine

Let’s say you have a company selling Widgets, and it’s called “George’s Widgets”. Should you advertise when someone does a search for George’s Widgets as you already show up in the top spot organically for that search, in fact, you have the top three spots in the organic search rankings. At Digital Caffeine, we consider it a best practice to run ads on your company name. Here are the reasons why. Control The Messaging When someone performs a search on your brand, they have heard of you somehow, somewhere. Whether they are a current customer, potential prospect, the media, or a competitor, your ability to serve up detail about your company will help promote your brand. By taking advantage of ad extensions such as call extensions, or Sitelink extensions, you can build your message even more by supplying a call to action and deep links directly to various pages of your site all from the Search Engine Results Page (SERP). Reinforce additional advertising efforts Whether you are running a national TV ad, have a sign on the outside of your building, or include your business’ name in your email signature, you are promoting your company. By running ads on search engines for your brand, you help to reinforce your message. Perhaps your company’s special sauce is that you do everything by hand, or you offer free estimates. By being able to show that directly in search results, you’re helping to reinforce your brand and your brand’s message Boost your Account’s overall Quality/Health Part of your accounts overall success depends on how well your Clickthrough Rate and Quality Scores are throughout your account. In general, a Brand Campaign has high Quality Scores and a much better […]

New Years Check-up: What To Look at With Your PPC Campaigns

by Jon Stroz @ Digital Caffeine

Around this time every year gyms get increasingly busier. At lunch time, instead of there being the 10 other people with me, there always seems to be 100 more, though it only tends to last a few weeks, you can see that people are trying to make some changes in the new year. Consider doing the same thing with your campaigns in AdWords, Bing, and Facebook. Some things you want to review with your Digital Marketing Campaigns: Check your landing pages. Make sure the information is still accurate, and on point. Have you done any A/B testing with them lately? Will one message, image, layout, or call to action work better than what you’re currently using? Review Your Campaign Settings. When are your ads running, who are they targeting, and where are they placed? Can you spot any trends that can help you spend your advertising dollars more wisely? How are those Keywords? Are they all driving traffic to your site? Are there any that you can pause, any you can add? Maybe moving around some keywords to different ad groups can help improve your Quality Scores. Check Those Ads. Remarketing ads can get stale if your customers see the same ads day after day. If your search ads are producing CTRs under 1% it’s time to do some testing to see how you can improve their effectiveness. Are you Advertising on Bing and Facebook? Why Does Google Rank Some Sites Higher Than Others?

You often hear business owners saying “I want to rank first” for their targeted keywords. That is because on average, 71.33% of searchers click on results shown on the first page. Page two and three get only 5.59% of clicks. And on the first page alone, the top 5 results account for 67.60% of clicks.

Why It’s Important to Own Your Ad Accounts

by Jon Stroz @ Digital Caffeine

By owning your ad accounts (Google, Bing, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) business owners can avoid the difficult (and sometimes nasty) chore of separating with your ad agency (Or individual) that is managing your campaigns and technically owns your accounts. It’s happened again. We’ve received another call from a small business owner that needs help with their  online marketing campaigns;  let’s call him “Ted”. Unfortunately for Ted, he doesn’t own his own accounts. Their current digital marketing agency has the keys to his accounts and won’t turn them over. At best, Ted receives a semi-weekly report that looks auto-generated. The reports contain no insights of how his campaigns are performing, or what his agency is doing to improve them.  Ted doesn’t even understand what everything on the report means. Meanwhile, Ted has been busy working on other parts of his business for the past two years that he hasn’t given much thought digital marketing. He just kind of assumed that a lot of the traffic coming to his site was from what his digital agency was doing. Ted receives a few phone calls and lead forms each week from his website, though to be honest, didn’t know if it was from Paid Search or Organic Search. Ted wasn’t even 100% sure of the difference, but was kind of afraid to ask. Unfortunately, here at Digital Caffeine, we receive about 1 or 2 of these calls a month. While sometimes budgets are too small for us to fully help out, we’re at least able to provide a quick overview of the difference between paid and organic search as well as give some insights of what to look for, and where to start. So Really, Why do You Need to Own Your Own Ad Accounts? Most Importantly, It’s […]

Big News from Google AdWords: Customer Match

by Jon Stroz @ Digital Caffeine

Reach Your Customers and Prospects through Google Search The latest advancement for Advertisers that work with Google is a new product called “Customer Match.” Facebook advertisers would recognize this as a “Custom Audience.”  Essentially, advertisers can now upload a list of email addresses in to AdWords to build a custom audience. When those individuals are signed-in to a Google product, advertisers can show them targeted ads about their brand, product, or services as well as upcoming promotions. Ads Can be Placed Within: Google Search YouTube Ads Gmail (via the Promotions Tab) From Google’s Inside AdWords Blog: Customer Match is a new product designed to help you reach your highest-value customers on Google Search, YouTube, and Gmail — when it matters most. Customer Match allows you to upload a list of email addresses, which can be matched to signed-in users on Google in a secure and privacy-safe way. From there, you can build campaigns and ads specifically designed to reach your audience. Let’s say you’re a travel brand. You can now reach people who have joined your rewards program as they plan their next trip. For example, when these rewards members search for “non-stop flights to new york” on Google.com, you can show relevant ads at the top of their search results on any device right when they’re looking to fly to New York. And when those members are watching their favorite videos on YouTube or catching up on Gmail, you can show ads that inspire them to plan their next trip. Using Customer Match, you can also generate Similar Audiences to reach new customers on YouTube and Gmail who are likely to be interested in your products and services. For example, you can drive awareness on […]

Google Now Allows Advertisers To Run Native Gmail Ads

by Jon Stroz @ Digital Caffeine

Though it’s been beta testing this “new” feature since 2013, Google has finally allowed all of their AdWords advertisers to start advertising within Gmail. These new ad formats can be accessed via the Display Network, using the Ad Gallery with four options for advertisers: Gmail Image Template Gmail Single Promotion Template Gmail Multi-Product Template Gmail Custom HTML Upload These ads thus far have mainly appeared within the Promotions Tab in Gmail, however advertisers can now show ads next to relevant emails that users receive. According to Google, this is how your ads can now appear: Gmail ads appear initially in a collapsed state at the top of the Gmail Promotions tab. Clicks on your collapsed ads expand them into a full email-sized canvas, where the viewer can interact with your ad’s images and text. People who expand your ad can choose to save it to their inbox by clicking the star icon, or by clicking the blue Save button at the bottom of the message. People can also forward your expanded ads to someone else as an email message. Differences between desktop and mobile Gmail The Gmail ads you create may look differently based on whether they appear in the Gmail mobile app, or in Gmail on a desktop computer. AdWords optimizes ads to help make sure they look great wherever they’re shown, so your ad’s size could be adjusted to fit the mobile Gmail format. The layout of your ad, however, will remain the same. Personally, I sometimes send random emails to myself with different keywords in them to see what sort of ads I receive. Like “Hey Jon, how is your ostrich farm coming along? Have you received any trampolines yet to help […]

Video Search Optimization (Video SEO)

Note: these search optimization tips work for videos on other hosting sites as well Did you know YouTube is the second most used search engine after Google itself? We receive a lot of questions about video search optimization including how to get videos to show up on YouTube and in Google search.  Here are a few pointers on video creation, titles, descriptions, tagging and promotion to gain the maximum amount of traction and exposure. Make your video stand out from the crowd while maximizing your branding: Create and display a very short (seven seconds or less) intro and outtro for each video to display your brand, logo, telephone number, website address and video title. Be sure to include a prompt within the video asking the viewer to subscribe, thumbs up and share your video with others. You may also display an unobtrusive overlay in the corner of the video to display your brand and web URL. (YouTube) Create and apply a custom thumbnail image to help each video stand out from the crowd. Suggested size 1920 x 1080 pixels for HD displays. The best time to optimize your video metadata is during the upload process. Here are a few tips to help improve how well your videos show up in search: The video title should be short (within 120 characters) yet descriptive. Think of it as a page title tag on your website. Example: “Video Search Optimization Tips and Advice by Digital Caffeine”. The video description is used to describe the video content and identify your brand using plain, natural language. Be sure to strategically include important search keywords where appropriate. You may also include a transcript of the video to improve search even more! […]

Google AdWords Update: So Long Sidebar Text Ads

by Jon Stroz @ Digital Caffeine

You may have heard the news, Google has made another change to their Search Results Page (SERP) and this one is a large one. Considering how basic the pages are, it seems tough to make waves, but they have. So Long Right Side Text Ads It has now been confirmed that Google has removed side bar text ads from search results pages. That real estate is now going to be filled by Google Knowledge Panels and Product Listing ads. Google will also increase the number of potential text ads that will show at the top of search results pages to four, and at the bottom to three. They say that four ads will appear at the top for “highly commercial” queries, and they give the example of “hotels in NYC” or “Car Insurance.” This has led many in the industry to speculate that Google is talking about term that are used by people intending to make an immediate purchase. Additionally, the total number of ads that can now show on a page of search results lowers to a maximum of seven, down from 11, when side bar text ads were shown. So What Does this Mean For Advertisers? Currently, there is some debate about this. The biggest impact will be for those advertisers that were bidding to a particular position, since the positions have changed, if you were trying to get to the sidebar, you’ll need to adjust your strategy. For others, there’s going to be some time to figure out what happens. Will you have to pay more for clicks? Will it be more competitive (vying for a potential 7 spots versus 11)? You’re going to need to monitor what goes on with your account, and […]
