The Story Behind Why I Started Elle & Company

The Story Behind Why I Started Elle & Company

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

“How did you get your business off the ground?” It’s a question I get asked pretty regularly by creatives who are in the beginning stages of starting their business.  They want to know how I grew my audience, how I was able to book clients, and how I made the leap to full-time.  I have to smile as I attempt to answer it, because the irony of it all is that I never set out to start a business. As a matter of fact, I swore up and down that I would never, ever own a business, because I grew up seeing firsthand all the things a business required. (For those of you who’ve heard this story, you haven’t heard the whole story. Keep reading.)

4 Compelling Reasons Every Small Business Should Use Web Push Notifications

by Reshu Rathi @ Betaout Blog

Website push notifications are one of the most effective marketing tools that allow you to communicate with your subscribers on all the devices be it mobile, tablet, or desktop. Savvy marketers are using this channel to grow traffic and to engage their customers in real-time, however, very few small businesses have realized its true potential. Having said that, there are a number of reasons as to why small businesses should be using website push notifications. Given below are four compelling reasons: 1. Get traffic with fewer resources A common challenge for every small business is how to connect with new visitors and engage returning visitors to its site with fewer resources. Well, the answer is web push notifications as they’re comparatively cheaper than email and retargeting ads and you don’t need to create an app for them (which is an expensive affair). Also, the opt-in rate of push notifications is significantly higher in comparison to emails which means your push notification list is going to be bigger than your email list. So, if you aren’t using website push notifications, you’re leaving a low hanging fruit. 2. Reach people across multiple devices In this multi-connected world, your customer journey is spread across multiple touchpoints. Web push notifications allow you to reach them across devices through mobile web and desktop web with highly relevant messages based on their website behaviors (provided your customer has enabled push on your desktop website and your mobile website). The only trick is to track the user across devices to avoid blasting them with the same message on every device. For example, if you know that a customer is active on his smartphone in the morning and his PC in the afternoon, and if you want to send him an offer in the afternoon then you should send a desktop push notification instead of the smartphone to get better results. Whenever you send a web push notification, make sure that the content is relevant and contextually rich. 3. Engage customers in real-time Success in marketing depends a lot on timing especially, if you are running a small business. Why? Because every order can have a significant impact on your bottom line. Website push allows your message to reach customers within seconds after it is sent. So, it’s the best way to get the attention of your customers especially if the offer is time bound. For example, if a customer has added a product to his wish list and that particular product goes on sale for a short period then you can send him a push notification instead of an email to draw immediate attention. And even if your visitor isn’t active on your site, web notifications will appear in their web browser in the top-right corner for them to see as soon as they are active on their device and are can’t be ignored. 4. Stay connected Not everyone who visits your site will make a purchase in his first visit or join your email list instantly. Push notification gives you the opportunity to stay connected with your new visitors. But, to be successful, you’ll have to personalize your efforts. Just sending web push notifications is not enough – your messages should provide value to your subscribers. Here’s how to make your push notification valuable: Use segmentation to segregate your subscribers into different buckets. Start with the browsing data: which product categories have they browsed? Have they added anything to their wish list or cart? Another way to customize web push messages is by using the location of your subscribers. Website push notifications if used interactively, can be your best bet to effectively communicate any message you need to convey urgently.

5 Simple Push Notification Hacks to Increase Your Click-Through Rates

by Reshu Rathi @ Betaout Blog

Source: Unspalsh Are your push notifications generating the response you want them to? Perhaps you are not getting enough clicks on them, or they’re not generating any revenue for your app. No matter what it is, don’t lose hope and curse your luck. Though achieving a good ROI from your push messages isn’t easy especially in this fast-paced mobile era, where an average person has 60-90 apps installed on their phone, and everyone is vying for the same eyeballs. However, there are a handful of push notification “hacks” you can use to engage your users and get good returns. Try these hacks the next time you send push notifications to improve your click-through rates. 1. Stop blasting all your push messages at the same delivery time It’s well known that push messages can increase your app engagement and hence retention.  But many marketers forget that they have to reach the users based on their time zones. In fact, I’ve analyzed push notifications from a lot of international brands, and they haven’t got even this basic thing right. They are sending push messages without paying attention to the time zone their users are located in. Timing is everything. A push notification that does not take into account the time zone and the preferred time of its users is not going to get their attention. All of us have been the victim of getting brand messages at the wrong time (early morning, midnight). The failure to send messages on personalized timings will annoy users and force them to opt out of your push notifications and might even force them to uninstall your app. Examples of wrong timing You are not going to get any results from your push notifications if users don’t see them. And chances of people checking your messages way past midnight are very less. Not optimizing your send time is one thing, but blasting your push notifications at an inappropriate time should be a criminal offense (just kidding). Timing can make or break your marketing messages. Send-time optimization is the key to engage your users with timely and relevant messages for every user. 2. Use advanced personalization Everybody loves a personal touch. A push message is much more likely to be opened when it’s highly personalized for the user receiving it. Though most of us know this but, in reality, there are very few brands who are going further than first-name personalization. Why? Advanced personalization requires you to collect actionable customer data including browsing data, customer preferences, and demographics data like gender, age and location too. But there are very few brands who’re intelligently using their sign-up forms to collect these details. Given below is an example to show you how to and how not to use your sign-up form fields: 3. Be action oriented Effective marketing leads to action. But when it comes to push notifications, it is easier said than done. With small space, many brands struggle to insert an action oriented message and miss the mark. Marketers need to guide their prospects with a call to actions and a clear message. If your customers aren’t clear about what action you want them to take, then they will only regard it as an interruption and will simply ignore it. Now you can even have more than one action button in your push messages. The only rule to do it right is linking each call to action button to its landing page instead of generic home page targeting. SaksFifthAvenue, the multi-brand luxury retailer, has correctly utilized its limited space. In addition to telling users what is in it for them, the push notification includes an inline action button so users can take the desired steps from notifications. 4. Inject emoticons into your push messages A well-crafted copy can make a huge difference in push notifications open rate, in fact, it is one of the keys to its success, but unlike email, you’ve very limited space to show your copywriting skills here. So, try to include emojis in your message (if it suits your message) to convey your message in fewer words. Emoticons are your best weapon to make your message stand out and express it in fewer words. 5. Provide value Last but not the least your push messages should provide value. If you keep sending valuable messages, then users will start opening every message you send, and your click-through rates will sky rocket. Though trust doesn’t build overnight so, plant the seed and be patient. If on the other […]

4 Reasons Web Push Notifications Should Not Take a Back Seat to Email Marketing

by Reshu Rathi @ Betaout Blog

Web push notification is not a new marketing tool anymore but is one that’s under-utilized. This messaging channel is cost-effective and has the potential to bolster your outreach. But, many marketers are overlooking this marketing channel. With this in mind, given below are four occasions where website push notifications will prove to be highly effective: 1. Your deal is time sensitive Most brands these days use time sensitive deals to increase their conversions. Why? Because urgency is an excellent psychological motivator, it drives people to take action. Now, I’m pretty confident that this isn’t news to you. But if you’re using only emails to push these deals then you’re leaving money on the table. Here’s why–firstly, the average time for email recipients to view an email message is 6.4 hours (Zipstripe). Secondly, the open rates of emails are nose-diving. We at Betaout conducted a study and found that open rates for web push notifications are 40 percent higher than for email. 2. You want to cut down expenses Marketing is where businesses spend a lot of their money. So this is where you need to manage your money right to reduce your costs. Creating an email is an expensive affair, as it requires a lot of time in designing and drafting copy. And, sometimes for small and medium sized companies, it’s tough to spend that much time and resources. It makes sense at those times to send web push notifications–composing a push message is a lot quicker and cheaper. However, we recommend not sending every offer in web push notifications (especially the coupons and codes with a long-term validity). Otherwise, your subscribers might end up not using them. 3. You don’t want to fall in the clutter Though email marketing has proven to generate the biggest ROI and studies, have shown that an average company sees an ROI of 38% for every dollar spent on email marketing.  But, with the increase in the number of email messages, (we receive 121 messages per day, each year), this number is only going to soar up in the coming years. And unless your emails are too good and your subscribers are too engaged, you can’t just expect people to open your emails. Besides, website push messages have better open and response rate which makes it an effective communication channel for every online business. 4. Your email list is small Now you must be thinking what does the size of your email list has to do with web push notifications. Here it is—-do you know opt-in rates for web push notifications is higher than that of email opt-in rates? Why? Because email is the most personal medium and people believe in guarding their email accounts against the marketing messages. Since it is hard to build an email database push notifications gives you a chance to reach people you couldn’t have reached otherwise.   Push notifications is a powerful tool in your marketing arsenal. However, it’s always a good idea to be mindful when using it. Because once your customers will unsubscribe you’ve no chance of getting them back.

My Process for Consistently Blogging

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

"I fall behind on my blog posts all the time, I'd love to learn how to streamline blogging and keep on top of it!" "How to write more content. I hate writing and I'm not good at it, so I avoid it even though I KNOW content is what will help me succeed." "More on the practicalities of blogging. Choosing images for posts." I recently conducted my annual reader survey. These were some of the responses I received to the question “What would you like to learn more about from Elle & Company?”  I was surprised to learn that many of you want to learn about my blogging process and how I am able to consistently blog. Many of you recognize the importance of blogging, but identified it as a struggle (which I totally empathize with).  Blogging isn’t quite so difficult if you have a clear-cut process. So today I’m sharing a behind-the-scenes look at my blogging process.

If I Were Starting My Business from Scratch, This Would Be My Game Plan

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

So you want to start a business.   You have a ton of motivation and excitement at first, but all of a sudden reality sets in.    There are so many tasks involved, the majority of which you’ve never tackled before. You’re way out of your comfort zone, overwhelmed by all the things that need to get done.    Where do you even begin?   When you’re first starting out, it can be difficult to see the forest through the trees.   When I first started Elle & Company, I found myself piecing together all that I thought needed to get done (forgetting a bunch of steps along the way).    I longed for a step-by-step list of what to conquer and when.   Now, three and a half years into running my online business, I’ve had time to reflect on what worked and what I could’ve done differently to save time (and stress).   So I’m paying it forward. I’ve created a step-by-step list of what to focus on when you’re trying to get your business off the ground.   If I were to go back and start Elle & Company from scratch, here’s what my game plan would look like.

So today I'm going to share 15 clever content ideas to use Instgaram stories to promote your business.

4 Steps to Creating Good Emails in Less time

by Reshu Rathi @ Betaout Blog

Email marketing works, we all know that. For every dollar spent on email marketing, the average company sees an ROI of 38%. Also, 66 percent of consumers have made a purchase online as a result of an email marketing message (Direct Marketing Association). Since it works so well, marketers spend a lot of time and resources to create good email campaigns that resonate well with their audience and elevates your brand experience. But what if you’re pressed for time and don’t have enough resources to deploy to this channel? After all, marketers are always pressed for time and resources.  Well, if you find yourself in that situation, you can use the step-by-step approach given below to create good emails campaigns in less time and budget.  1. Set smart goals First thing’s first: before you start creating an email campaign, you must have a clear goal in mind — whether it’s to build the relationship with your subscribers or drive more purchases or to bring back churned customers. Too often, email marketers create emails without giving much thought to what they’re trying to achieve. Don’t make this mistake. Without creating goals, you’ll constantly be in conflict with what to include and what not to include in your message. You’ll be required to spend more time and energy in creating emails and end up cramming them with too much content and untargeted offers. Quick tip: Make sure your goals are not only specific but measurable too. 2. Decide on how often to send When it comes to email marketing, the biggest challenge most marketers face is estimating the best frequency to send emails. If you send too many emails, people will unsubscribe. And if you send after a longer period of time then you risk brand recall. So how to decide exactly how many to send? Well, there are a couple of ways to determine that — you can use data to segment your engaged subscribers and you can send more number of emails to them, you can ask your subscribers to choose their preferred number for emails they would like to receive from you in a given time, or you can survey your subscribers. Whatever you do, keep your subscribers in mind and ensure that you send them an email when you have something to offer to them. Quick tip: Keep experimenting with your send frequency until you arrive at the sweet spot.  3. Keep it short and simple Marketers often spend hours, sometimes even days, crafting long emails; so that they don’t have to send multiple emails in a short time span. But they forget that long and detailed emails take more time to create as well as to consume. And people don’t have that much time to spend on an email.  Do you know 75% of Gmail’s 900 Mn users access their accounts via mobile devices? –TechCrunch. It’s tough for them to consume large emails on small screen devices. Keep it brief and simple. Pick one goal per email and write a simple message that revolves around that goal only. This will help you stay focused and create engaging emails in less time. Quick tip: No matter how cliche it sounds; simplicity rules. Your email should be short and clear so that it takes only a few moments to read and act on it. 4. Use templates A well-designed email can elevate your subscriber’s engagement and up your click-through rates and sales too. That’s why so many talented email marketers still spend a lot of their time in the designing part. Well, creating one-off designs is great but it’s costly and time-consuming. The best way to save your time and money is to use pre-designed templates that can be personalized by adding few images and changing a bit of design.  Quick tip: Pick a set of templates according to your requirement, and reuse them.

How AI Can Create Value For E-Commerce Businesses

by Nandini Rathi @ Betaout Blog

High AI adoption was seen in the high tech and telecoms, automotive and assembly, and financial services industries, while retail, media, and entertainment experienced medium AI adoption. – McKinsey report Whether you are a big retailer or a small-sized business struggling to make optimal use of big data, you need to implement AI to make your customers feel special as well as to drive sales at scale. Beyond basic personalization and product recommendations like “customers who bought this item also bought…” – AI is making a big impact on marketing, helping online retailers to enhance every step of the customer journey. From AI-powered personal assistants for customer service to tailored product recommendations, replenishment reminders, and automatic inventory management, AI can automate when a customer receives communication personalized based on his interests, preferences and past purchases. Here are a few ways AI can offer real value to your customers: 1) AI for enhanced customer experience The modern day marketing is all about reaching out to a customer at the right time with the right context. There are a number of ways to facilitate customer intelligence using AI. AI-driven intelligence can help marketers to send messages that are personalized, contextual, relevant, and timely. Machine learning algorithms can predict the best time to reach out to a customer by analyzing his past behavior – what time of the day the customer is active and is most likely to open your messages. Dynamic content is another powerful way to reach out to customers at the right time with the right context. For example, a push notification or an email will feature different recommendations depending on the demographics of the customer. E-commerce brands use dynamic content for weather-focused promotions to make the messaging experience more personalized, relevant and of-the-moment. The other factors that influence dynamic content include things such as price-sensitive offers, the day of the week, time of day, and the marketing medium.  2) AI-powered personalization to improve the customer journey Real-time marketing involves a greater level of personalization throughout the customer lifecycle. In order to offer a seamless, personalized experience, retailers need to center their marketing on the user personas that are updated in real-time. Single customer view powers the customer intelligence based on key data insights like previous purchases, browsing history, age, and location. Another example is AI-driven product recommendations tailored to each customer. Instead of the one-size-fits-all solution, Amazon is known for, artificial intelligence and machine-learning algorithms leverage techniques like lifetime value models, advanced segmentation models to fuel personalized recommendations. 3) Getting granular is the key to prescriptive insights Artificial intelligence starts with data granularity. Marketing automation platforms like Betaout analyzes key metric drivers and millions of possible data outcomes in minutes to suggest actionable insights that aren’t otherwise possible for marketers to unearth on their own. Unlike manual data analysis data scientists are known for, AI-powered prescriptive intelligence comes with great accuracy and fast analysis. For instance, artificial intelligence bots can prescribe the most profitable marketing channel for business, most profitable segment, or the right offer. Prescriptive insights like these are the ones that truly matter. 4). A proper analytical framework is the building block of AI Artificial intelligence isn’t crystal-ball magic but is driven by big-data analytics. When it comes to deriving data-driven insights, it’s important to have an analytical framework in place. Your data-driven algorithms that feed the AI-system are as effective as asking the right questions and chasing the right metrics. Real-time marketing is all about implementing and iterating on a second-by-second basis and analytics plays an equally important role to see if your data-driven decisions have delivered the predicted outcome. Analytical dashboards are the key to implement AI successfully – from descriptive dashboards that are designed to offer data drill-downs at a more granular level to making predictions based on this historic data; analytics & AI combined are the keys to offer enhanced customer experience. Closure: AI-wizardry for retail isn’t limited to the above. There are a lot of other areas where AI is making a big impact like in increasing sales, engaging customers, product discovery and customer service. For instance, retail brands like Neiman Marcus, Asos, Nordstrom, and Urban Outfitters are using visual search to improve the online shopping experience. Top brands like Uber, Burberry, and 1-800-Flowers have been successfully engaging and acquiring new customers with one-to-one chat experience using chatbots. AI is constantly helping marketers connect with their customers in new and meaningful ways.

How to Balance a Full-Time Job and a Part-Time Freelance Business

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Starting a “side-hustle” has grown in popularity over the past few years, and it’s easy to understand why.  Maintaining a full-time job while pursuing a passion project on the side offers the best of both worlds: a steady paycheck and benefits along with the opportunity to make a little extra money doing something you love. And while there’s a lot to gain when starting a side-hustle, there’s also a lot of sacrifice. Here at Elle & Company, we know a thing or two about balancing a full-time job and a “side hustle.” I worked a few different 9-5 jobs while I worked to get my business up and running, and both of my assistants currently work full-time jobs while helping me with Elle & Company part-time. All three of us understand the time and energy that goes into balancing a full-time job and a part-time passion project.  So we rounded up some practical ways that we’ve been able to keep our heads above water and maintain our sanity in the process.

Feeling burnt out? 3 ways to bring the spark back to your business

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Confession: I used to be extremely critical of burnout. I would come across posts on the topic when I first started Elle & Company and thought the writers were being a tad bit overdramatic. If you’re doing what you love, can you really ever become burnt out? It was at a time in my business where I had a ton of motivation. I had a clear goal that I was working toward - creating a full-time business off of my love of design - and I was willing to work 10+ hours a day to get there. The momentum continued to increase as I saw some success in my business. Clients started to come rolling in, my blog was growing exponentially, and I started to offer more products and services. I hit my stride… ...and then recently, I hit a wall. The early mornings, late nights, and no vacations finally caught up with me. That was a month or two ago. Since then I’ve realized that burnout is a real thing.  And after some reflection and time off, I’ve discovered 3 simple things that can help you conquer burnout and bring some spark back to your business.

4 Misconceptions Small Businesses Have About Email Marketing

by Reshu Rathi @ Betaout Blog

Email is not a new marketing channel, yet small businesses have many misconceptions about email marketing. In the past, only big brands could afford to send beautiful, timely, and highly personalized emails, not anymore. Still, many small businesses are overlooking this reality far too often and that too for all the wrong reasons. That is why I’ve put together a list of four common misconceptions small businesses have about email marketing and ways to overcome them. 1. Email marketing automation is expensive Marketing automation has been around for some time now, but most of the automation tools were targeted at enterprise level companies. With high costs and complex integrations, only big brands could afford email automation. Today, however, marketing automation tools are designed specifically for B2C and small business owners. And the e-commerce companies who aren’t using email marketing channel to its full potential just to save costs will only go so far. Email marketing has proven to deliver the highest ROI for marketers. So, in the long run, the benefit far outweighs the cost. 2. Email marketing = promotional mailers There’s no doubt that promotional mailers are the bread and butter for email marketers. However, email marketing is much broader than sending promotional mailers. Many small business owners are only using email marketing just like every other marketing channel with the sole aim of driving sales. But, they forget that email marketing is not just the marketing channel with the best ROI but it is also the most powerful way to build relationships with your customers. Successful email marketers are doing behavioral marketing by sending emails based on user behavior. And marketers who are still using email to milk sales and sales alone will soon end up with a negative ROI from this channel. 3. Buying an email list is better than building one Building an email list is the topmost goal for email marketers. However, building an email list takes time and for small businesses that aren’t much popular, getting subscribers can be particularly challenging. Many SMB marketers are guilty of buying lists to reach their end goal quickly. If you are also making this mistake then remember more email addresses doesn’t mean more conversions, In fact, it has the opposite effect on your conversions as it damages your brand reputation and affects your email deliverability in the long run. The more, the merrier concept holds true only when you grow your subscribers base organically. 4. Creating beautiful emails is expensive and time-consuming Small e-commerce brands have limited resources. They can’t afford to devote time and money to design beautiful emails. Not anymore. Nowadays marketing automation tools offer professional-looking email templates and drag & drop editors to design beautiful emails in no time. These are some of the leading misconceptions about email marketing

6 Practical Ways to Gain More Confidence In Your Work

“I have written 11 books but each time I think 'Uh-oh, they're going to find out now’… I've run a game on everybody, and they're going to find me out." You might be surprised to learn, like I was, that Maya Angelou - a woman who was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, won five Grammys, and received a ton of other awards during her lifetime - struggled with “imposter syndrome.”  Her fear of not being good enough caused her to question her abilities and fear that others would learn that she wasn’t as great or as capable as they originally thought.  I wonder if you feel the same way with your business. You feel the pressure to keep up appearances. You doubt your abilities. You compare yourself to others who seem to do things better.  And you fear that even though things seem to be going well at the moment, people will eventually find out that you aren’t quite so great as you appear to be on Instagram.  The struggle with imposter syndrome can be crippling. I know from personal experience. But over the past few years, I’ve discovered 6 truths that have helped me gain more confidence in my work. I hope you find them helpful, too.

The Rules of Engagement Marketing – Making Customers for Life

by Nandini Rathi @ Betaout Blog

In today’s highly connected digital world, marketers have access to real-time customer data than ever before to engage consumers in personal and relevant ways. At the same time, it’s becoming challenging to leave an impact on your customers with the avalanche of marketing messages. If the sole aim of your marketing strategy is to sell more, then you’ll not unlock any karma points in the long run. It’s easy to get a sale by throwing away discounts, but it’s harder to earn customer loyalty. Marketing strategies are no longer about the purchase; it’s about an engaged customer base. As the old saying goes “No one likes to be sold; everyone likes to buy.” Gone are the days when marketing and selling meant the same. Today, brands are investing heavily in social media channels like Snapchat, Instagram just to maintain a dialogue with their audiences. An engaged customer will turn into a loyal customer in no time. Here are the key Rules for Engagement Marketing. #Rule 1: Humanize your brand with user-generated content If your storytelling is all about your brand, then it will be perceived as advertising. The only way to authenticate your storytelling is by leveraging user-generated content. Comscore says brand engagement increases an average of 28% when users are exposed to a combination of user created product videos and professional content. The new marketing approach is to put the customers on the center stage. Brands have changed the way storytelling has been done by using user-generated content to influence millennial shoppers. Instead of tooting their own horn, e-commerce brands are using UGC in a whole lot of creative ways from engaging their customers to brand building and to increase conversions. Home improvement retailer Lowe ran a successful Vine campaign “Fix in Six” featuring six-second stop-motion videos on DIY home improvement tricks and tips. GoPro had a massive increase in their revenue with their “Creator’s Challenge” user generated videos, Warby Parker’s Home Try-On Program was a huge success with the social factor integrated into it. The brand garnered a massive social buzz with customers posting pictures wearing the glasses on their social media sites. User generated videos don’t require any marketing budget and are a hit with everyone from small retailers to luxury brands like Burberry. According to the Content Marketing Institute, 70% of B2C companies budgeted UGC in 2015. #Rule 2: Make your marketing less transactional and more interactional Bombarding your customers with too many marketing messages can only spell doom in this era of customer-centric marketing. Today, sending the right content to the right person throughout the buyer journey is the premise of every good marketing strategy. In this age of instant gratification, engaging customers at every touch point of the purchase journey is essential for delivering a consistent and engaging experience. For example, welcoming a new customer on board is a classic example of how brands are engaging their customers from the beginning, just like you would in any other relationship, thus resulting in increased customer engagement, improved sales, and retention. Lifecycle marketing when done correctly, will not just shorten your purchase cycle but will also help you win customer loyalty. #Rule 3: Engage customers across channels The consumer journey is spanned across multiple touch points–devices, applications, and more. With every siloed interaction you’re losing sight of your customer and engaging them with relevant experiences is highly impossible–unless you have a single customer view. The only way to connect the dots and truly understand your customer is by conjoining all engagement points. The single customer view is the sacred path to driving omnichannel intelligence to engage with today’s empowered buyers. #Rule 4: Predict and engage The best way to engage your customers is by giving them what they want—much like a personal concierge. With artificial intelligence and machine-learning algorithms, predicting customer behavior will help you proactively engage your customers. “Investment in artificial intelligence will triple as firms look to tap into complex systems, advanced analytics, and machine-learning technology,” according to a 2017 Forrester research report on the “Age of the Customer.” The deluge of data has untapped customer insights, and machine-learning algorithms hold power to engage customers with contextual and relevant messaging. For example, a customer who has purchased a dress will be interested in receiving footwear/accessory recommendations to complete her look. You can engage a customer with relevant recommendations and predict their purchasing behaviors based on their past purchases. Engagement marketing is the new ROI-driver. Spending time and money on acquisition without any engagement strategy in […]

3 Signs Your Email Marketing Strategy Is Failing (And How You Can Fix It)

by Reshu Rathi @ Betaout Blog

Email marketing is and will remain the most valuable tool in your digital marketing toolbox, as it drives higher ROI than any other marketing channel. “For every $1 spent on email marketing, the average return is $44.25.” Still, it doesn’t mean sending emails will put you on the path to success, unless your email marketing strategy is fail proof.   But how do you know whether your email marketing strategy is good or not? Well, there are some signs which will show you if it isn’t. Given below are three of them: 1. Your unsubscribe rates are high It’s common knowledge that building an email list is critical to email marketing success. But as much as growing your email list is important; it’s equally important to retain your subscriber base. Sadly, most marketers only focus on the prior. Do you check the number of unsubscribes you receive per email campaign? Well, receiving few unsubscribes per campaign is normal, i.e., if you receive less than a 2% unsubscribe rate, you are well within industry norms (though they differ according to industry). But if your unsubscribe rates are higher than this then it means your email marketing strategy is not working. Now the question is what you can do to stop subscribers from unsubscribing? Given below are top three mistakes that force subscribers to opt-out from your list; make amends if you’re making any of them. Sending frequency Your copy is not relevant. Your emails are boring. Unsubscribe rates are an excellent way to track whether your email marketing strategy is going in the right direction or not so pay attention.  2. Your emails are landing in the spam folder You undoubtedly spend a lot of time in designing the email, crafting the email copy and creating an excellent offer to boost your email conversions. But have you ever looked whether your emails are landing in your recipient’s inbox? Well, you should monitor your deliverability, and if you see any issues there, then you should consult with your email marketing service provider to resolve them. Now don’t start panicking just because some of your emails are not landing in subscribers’ inboxes; as per one report by Vaughan, 95% is considered close to ideal for the delivery rate. Also, given below are a few suggestions, which you can use to avoid falling in the spam trap: Ask subscribers to “Whitelist” you in the very first email. Avoid using risky words in your emails that may trigger spam filters. Pay attention to your “From field” address it should be clear and trustworthy. Need more help? Here’re five excellent ways to keep your emails out of spam. 3. Your click-through rates are on a downward spiral If there were a single metric which determines whether your email marketing strategy is on track or not, it would be click-through rate. It is a measure of how many people who opened your message found it engaging and clicked on it. If your click-through rates are dropping then it’s possible that your copy is responsible; it might just not be good enough to earn clicks. Here are a few ways to stop your click through rates from going down: Segment your email list so that you can send relevant messages to every subscriber. Remember, relevancy has a huge effect on click-through rates than any other element. Avoid long messages. People normally like clear and short messages better. Place your CTA or any other clickable element above the fold especially if the majority of your subscribers are checking your emails on mobile.   Improving your email marketing is an ongoing process, and you won’t see results overnight. But simple changes to your approach — optimizing your email frequency, avoiding spam folder and segmenting your email list — will set your emails up for success for the long run.

An Inside Look at My Client Onboarding Process

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” - Benjamin Franklin When you think about the client process, images of drafts, revisions, and the finished product may come to mind. And while those are crucial components, there are a lot of steps that need to happen before the client process begins in order for things to run smoothly. I’ve found that the onboarding process sets the stage for the rest of the client project. How you handle inquiries, meetings, contracts, and invoices can make or break the entire process; it sets a precedent. So today I’m inviting you inside of my client onboarding process that’s been tweaked over these last three years.  My hope is that while you may not follow it to a T, you might walk away with a step or two that helps make your client process run smoother.

10 Tips to Tighten Your Copy

10 Tips to Tighten Your Copy

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Whether you’ve been in business for 2 years or 2 minutes, you know that being an entrepreneur requires a slew of skills.  You have to be a salesperson, a marketer, an accountant, a project manager, a designer, a social media expert, a researcher, and a copywriter - all while being an expert in your particular field.  And you’re probably willingly (yet hesitantly) diving into all of those roles because you have a product, service, or idea that you enjoy and believe in. But in order to get clients and customers to pay attention to you and purchase your great product or service, you have to be able to communicate about it. You have to write about it in a way that’s genuine and persuasive. Emails, blog posts, headlines, bios, sales pages, social media updates - being an entrepreneur means you’re constantly having to write new copy for your brand and your business. But here’s the thing: Most of us aren’t trained copywriters.  We haven’t had a copywriting pro sit down with us one-on-one and teach us how to write in a way that’s concise, compelling, and personable. And if you’re anything like me, you might also have some serious resistance to promoting yourself and selling your products.  But copywriting doesn’t have to be quite so painstaking and overwhelming.  These 10 simple copywriting tricks will help you clearly communicate about your business in a way that resonates with people and encourages them to take action.

11 Crafty Ways to Repurpose Old Content

by Lauren Hooker @ Blog

Content creation is at the heart of Elle & Company.  Between blog posts, weekly newsletters, Ellechats, social media posts, and Library additions, I spend a lot of time pumping out new content each week. But here’s the thing about new content: it has a shelf life. Newsletters get buried in inboxes. Blog posts get buried in archives. Social media posts quickly fade away from the feeds of your followers. Webinars end.  The content you create (along with the time and energy you put into them) quickly gets buried under your newer content. But don’t be fooled; you didn’t labor in vain!  Enter, the art of repurposing content.

How to Use Content to Improve Customer Lifetime Value

An Inside Look at What We're Currently Working On

This isn’t a normal Elle & Company blog post.   In a normal Elle & Company blog post, I share strategies and write about topics after I’ve already had time to experiment and figure out what works.   But after reading your replies to my annual survey a month or two ago, I saw that you want to see things as they’re happening. You requested more behind-the-scenes.    Your wish is my command.   I have to admit, though - this is a little out of my comfort zone. Because if something doesn’t work out the way I hope it will, my failure will be public knowledge. All of you will know about it.    But that’s a more honest look at running a business, isn’t it? Trial and error, falling down once, and getting up twice.   So here’s the inside scoop about what my team and I are focusing on this quarter, along with why and how we plan to accomplish it.
