Introducing the Incredible Flip-Flopper!

by DAN CAPRERA @ McSweeney’s

"President Trump said on Thursday morning that he supports legislation that would protect young undocumented immigrants from deportation… [contradicting] his own Twitter posts early Thursday morning when he said, “no deal was made last night on DACA.” — New York Times, 9/14/17

- - -

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages… Come one, come all for the show of a lifetime!

Maximilian’s Magnificent Traveling Circus is pleased (no, thrilled!) to introduce its latest spectacular performer! Hailing all the way from an emotionally withholding childhood in Queens, this next act has spent a lifetime learning how to astound, baffle, and AMAZE! So now, ladies and gentlemen, give a huge round of applause for our next act…

The Incredible Flip-Flopper!

Yes, folks! You’ve all heard the rumors, but look out… Because he’s real. He’s unpredictable. And he’s in this very room! So please, stand aghast and astonished at he juggles his poorly-conceived immigration policies. (Notice how he balances ever-so-carefully on the tightrope between outright racism and a 35% approval rating!). And then, right as it looks as if he might plummet into the pit of impeachment, get ready for his signature move…

The Incredible Flip-Flop!

Tremendous! The man is simply astounding!!! But what’s that, you say? How does he do it? How can the Incredible Flip-Flopper unveil an APPALLING immigration policy one day, and then meet with Democrat leaders to BAFFLINGLY renege on his earlier statements, and then immediately tweet out at 3 A.M. (WAY TOO EARLY!) that this meeting didn’t change his mind, and then MERE HOURS LATER announce that it actually did change his mind and that he now supports new DACA legislation!

You won’t BELIEVE these flip-flops!

Ladies and gentlemen, please cheer for his acrobatic feats of bad logic and aggrandizement! Gasp at how easily he can justify his reversals! Hyperventilate at the fact that, apparently, there are NO NEGATIVE RAMIFICATIONS for anything he says! Does this new immigration deal mean that he’ll take a milder stance on the border wall? Will there still be a government shut-down? Is he a Democrat now? Will his misguided, poorly-researched statements ever come back to haunt him?

We’re all living in a nightmare world where words have no value anymore!

And if you’re hungry for more, don’t worry! The Incredible Flip-Flopper comes with a whole coterie of flip-flopping freaks, such as:

  • The Stupendously Spineless House Speaker (HOW DOES HE CONTORT HIS WORLDVIEW THAT EASILY???)
  • The Bewilderingly Bland Son-In-Law (HE’S LIKE BREAD IF BREAD WAS HUMAN!)
  • The Silver-Tongued, Silver-Haired Second-In-Command (FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO THOUGHT THAT THE BAD GUY IN THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME WASN’T RELIGIOUS ENOUGH!)
  • Steve Bannon (I ACTUALLY DON’T KNOW WHO’S SIDE HE’S ON ANYMORE!)
  • And literally millions of equally outspoken supporters!

The Incredible Flip-Flopper flip flops all over this big top!

Now, I can tell that some children in the audience have gotten a little scared. So to all you boys and girls here at Maximilian’s Magnificent Traveling Circus, remember that you have absolutely no reason to be afraid! The fantabulously Incredible Flip-Flopper may look dangerous, but HE’S AS TAME AS A KITTY CAT! A kitty cat who, incidentally, could (once again) change his mind at any second and allow 800,000 boys and girls to be deported!

Oh shit, this is real life!

So please folks, make some noise for these flippable, floppable, whiplash-inducing antics! Because whether it comes to immigration, health care, environmental protection, human rights, the opioid crisis, prison reform, or even just whether or not he owns a bathrobe, the Incredible Flip Flopper is guaranteed to delight, confound, and dismay for years to come!

Ugh. I’m so tired.

Why I’m Leaving Derry, Maine — A Medium Post

by LIAM O'BRIEN @ McSweeney’s

When I moved here six years ago, I was like so many young people. I came to the big city holding tight to my dreams, and I envisioned a burgeoning creative community that would welcome me with open arms. And when I settled here, I didn’t mind the hustle and grind, the perpetual crush of bodies on the bus, the endless cycle of too little money for too much expense, the screams. I knew I was putting in my time so that when the moment came, I would “Make It.”

But six years later, I now have to admit: I was wrong. Dead wrong. And that’s why I’m leaving Derry.

What, really, do I have to show for my time here? A string of dead-end jobs, a few sticks of secondhand furniture, and a shockingly blasé attitude toward child abduction. My soul, like my apartment and my bank account, is mostly empty.

It didn’t start this way. When you’re a sensitive and awkward boy growing up in small-town Maine, city life seems like heaven. The vision of so many new friends, lovers, and opportunities all clustered in one mid-sized burg that sports shockingly low rents and an up-and-coming vaporwave scene was too much to resist. “Derry’s on the upswing,” they said. It’s not like it used to be. It’s warm and inviting, and they finally fixed all the drainage issues.

And yes, my early days after moving to Derry had their perks. The old-fashioned soda fountain was charming, and people seemed open-minded and friendly, if a little… vacant, I guess? I wasn’t expecting it to all be easy street. Okay, three (!) roommates in a row disappeared and were later found dismembered in a culvert. Okay, the pipes in my apartment would whisper my secret nickname known only to me and my long-dead grandfather. Okay, Maine winters are a little long. But them’s the breaks, right? Wrong.

After six years of searching for some greater substance to Derry, I’m here to tell you: there isn’t one. The vibrant cultural center we were promised doesn’t exist. The closest you come to finding it is when a funky new coffee shop opens on the corner where there used to be a Chipotle, the kind of coffee shop in which I always imagined I’d write the great American novel — like, exactly imagined, down to the color of the upholstery (dusky rose) and the music playing on the stereo (Art Blakey) — except nobody else but me seems to notice this coffee shop is even there, and then when I walk in all the baristas are rotting cadavers shrieking racial slurs, and so many balloons just bouncing around where food’s being prepared that it has to be a health code violation, not to mention just gauche. That’s bleak, but it’s the truth, and it’s not just me. Ask anyone and it’s probably happened to them. That exact specific thing with the racist corpses. Not exactly the multicultural paradise you thought, huh?

Plus, it’s an absolute ordeal to date in this town. Everyone is so emotionally closed off. No joke, I’ve actually had girls ask if I’m going to literally transform into their dead abusive father and crawl out of their fridge, like their last boyfriend. I’m sorry you had a rough childhood and some bad relationships, but that’s just rude to ask somebody on a first date.

I used to think that loud, cramped BYOB parties in overheated apartments were the crucibles of human connection and inspiration. Now I see them for what they are; a shelter where underpaid and overextended adults swill bad wine alongside the similarly afflicted, all the while clinging to the ever-fading vision of a secure future. It’s toxic and petty and there’s always that one guy who doesn’t actually know anyone there and who spends the whole night peacocking in a clown suit trying to talk girls into following him to the bathroom. Coke? Really? At his age, it’s just sad.

Do I still love this town? Yes, of course. The modern architecture along the main drag, which they rebuilt after some massive explosion a while ago that destroyed half the town and that nobody can seem to remember (talk about a lack of community), is breathtaking. I can still spend entire afternoons birdwatching in The Barrens, though all the birds are gone now except for the enormous one with Steve Bannon’s face, which I definitely imagined. I still enjoy being woken up by the soft chime of Amber Alerts. The lobster rolls are still delicious, but the vitality is gone.

You never see the soulful hallmarks of a real city; the art spaces, the warehouse parties, the graffiti. I can barely remember the last time I saw the hideous things my grandfather did to me spelled out in arterial blood on the walls of the library.

I know what you’re thinking. Another aging hipster whose rent got jacked and who suddenly thinks his urban ennui is unique. But here’s the thing: I know I’m not alone, and that’s why I’m writing this. There’s something wrong about Derry. Something evil underneath the surface of the town. It spreads everywhere and it sucks the joy and life out of us, and nobody wants to talk about it. Maybe it’s out of fear that they’ll have to confront their bad choices or admit that they’ve been laboring under a delusion, but everyone’s afraid to call it by its name.

But I know what it is. I’ve seen it. I’ve lived it. I descended into an improbably large cavern and chewed on its tongue so I won’t get cast into a hellish dimension of pure energy (which was overrated, btw.) And I’ll say its name:

Gentrification.

Let that sink in.

Face it, folks: Derry’s done. Don’t believe the blogs, the thinkfluencers or the cultural gatekeepers. The real community that used to live in the heart of the city is gone, not because it’s “moving to the new lofts in Derry Heights” or “disappearing suddenly” and “being found torn into several pieces and posed in the thrift store’s window display.” No, they’re running away — like me. They’re fleeing from a specter that chews up dreams and spit out failure. They’re decamping to the promised land, in Bridgton and Castle Rock, places where you can find community and soul and way better weather.

So goodbye, Derry. It’s been “real.”

UPDATE: FWIW I don’t know what kind of health curriculum they have in Derry Public Schools, or if it’s just smartphone culture, but kids in this town get sexualized WAY too early.

An Entreaty to My Creative Writing 101 Students to Please Stop Writing What You Know

by MEILAN STEIMLE @ McSweeney’s

To my Creative Writing 101 students —

I’m as aware as you are that on the first class of this semester I informed you all that the key to emotionally genuine work was to write what you know. However, I’ve also always held that the mark of the best professor is the ability to admit when one is wrong, which after slogging through your first pieces this weekend, I feel a moral obligation to do. You got me, I messed up, please write about literally anything else.

Look, I’m not saying that your emotional truth isn’t worth reading, but that’s also kind of what I’m saying. And it’s not your fault either! I understand that you all attend a prestigious, exclusive institution of higher education with an acceptance rate in the single digits. I understand that to get here you had to spend more time studying than going to parties or finding yourself in any meaningful capacity. But I also understand that if I have to read another story about how you and your stoic mother bonded on the way to SAT camp, I will blow my brains out across this desk, which I think we can all agree is less than ideal.

Allow me to explain. The idea behind the aphorism is that a story supplemented with your own life experiences will be emotionally richer than your teenage attempts to portray a situation you don’t have the maturity to execute effectively. However, this point becomes moot if your own life experiences amount to roughly 45 seconds of meaningful content. To put this another way, I would rather have the world’s best grilled cheese than a sloppy soufflé, but I would also rather have the world’s worst soufflé than a plate of tepid dogshit.

To help clarify my point, I’ve amassed a few examples from your first drafts of how writing what you know can result in the kind of violently inane work that threatens my consciousness:

  • As engaging as I found your story about a child fighting a mysterious “momster,” I think you would be better served with an ending other than your narrator vanquishing the beast and drawing a brand new Xbox from its corpse.
  • Your narrative about the time a protagonist sharing your name won first prize in the school science fair left me craving rawness, as well as character, conflict, and any punctuation mark besides the semicolon.
  • While every word covered in the Direct Hits series may technically fall under the umbrella of what you “know,” I wouldn’t take it as an invitation to include all of them in your 500-word short story. Other words have merit too! For example, articles and pronouns.
  • I know you put in time and effort to memorize all those Halsey songs, but I’d prefer not to read any of them quoted in their entirety in your submission.
  • If you must write about your grandparents, I’d appreciate if they did something other than silently cook food emblematic of your cultural heritage. My middle-schooler wrote one of those and it was just as mind-numbingly boring as the ten I just graded.
  • The next person who submits a breakup poem gets an F.

Additionally, I know that the SAT doesn’t exactly foster creativity since they axed that analogy section, so I’ve thought of a few prompts to help you along for your next assignment. I trust you’ll find the resulting work a vast improvement over your initial attempts:

  • A unicorn comes to the big city for the first time. So many possibilities here! What will the unicorn do first? I would guess probably not SAT camp!
  • Make every first word of a sentence form a secret message. Hollywood has been very successful at using Easter eggs to distract from a lack of substance, and so can you!
  • Think of the last dream you had. Then just submit that. The psychedelic nonsense of your subconscious mind will provide the creative “je ne sais quoi” lacking in literally any of your conscious thoughts.
  • Format your text into a fun shape like an apple or a tree. A picture is worth a thousand words!
  • Here’s a fun “story hack” that’ll help you tech kids revise your current drafts: open your document, then on your keyboard, press “command (or control) + a”, then “delete.” Wow! It’s looking better already.

I understand that this kind of mental gymnastics might be trying for some of you, and it’s okay if this isn’t easy. I assure you that my door is always open, so it won’t hit you on your way out. Don’t worry — I have utter confidence that the chemistry or engineering department will welcome you with open arms. I can see many of you pursuing a promising career in interventional anesthesia.

Best wishes,
Your Professor
