Never Mess With Instagram And The Reasons Why

by Sheena Mathieson @ Phoenix SEO Consultants – Search Engine Optimization Gilbert

Instagram is one of the popular social media nowadays after Facebook and Twitter dominated the whole network services. It displays series of photos of people who would like to share their day-to-day moments. Everyone can follow anyone upon looking at their news feed and clicking on the follow button on their bio. Profiles can be private or public; depending on how personal the account is. Random people can post anything on it and even buy likes on Instagram. How do people mess with Instagram? This public social networking service has its proper etiquette. Unlike Facebook and Twitter, Instagram follows formal […]

Stock Photography or Photo Shoot?

by Jim Miller @ Quantum Communications | Advertising + Marketing Agency | Louisville, Kentucky

Every new creative project has its challenges. What’s the theme going to be? The tone? What do we need to say and what’s the best way to say it? And among all those decisions (and a thousand more) is another one we make on nearly every project that requires visuals—do we need a photo shoot or will stock photography (licensed, pre-shot photos) suffice? Below you’ll find an overview of the benefits and drawbacks of each. Easy & Affordable Two of the biggest benefits to stock photography are price and availability. Stock is usually relatively affordable when compared to the larger cost of a photo shoot, which requires a professional photographer, art director, and many other expenses. Stock is also available to buy on the spot. There are dozens of stock photo companies on the web that offer high-quality images around the clock for download. There’s a lot of great stock out there to choose from. Every day it gets easier to find very artistic and stylish stock images. In fact, you’d be surprised by how many well-known brands use it in their advertising. It’s all about finding the best image for the concept at hand. A True Reflection of Your […]

SEO is Farming, Facebook Ads & Google Adwords are Hunting

by Brian Nagele @ SEO Digital Group

When it comes to digital marketing, my opinion is strong on integrating both long term and short term tactics to help a business grow. SEO – Search Engine Optimization – Long Term Search engine Optimization usually takes time to gain rank on the first page for Google and Bing search results.  This long term strategy, when properly executed, pays off for many months and years.  Having your business listed in the top 5 to 10 spots on important keyword searches will gain you more traffic and hopefully more customers. It takes weeks, if not months or longer to gain first page rank.  There are many factors involved and competition for the keywords is something you will need to understand.  The more competitive keywords you target the longer it might take to rank.  It is absolutely worth the wait and you should start this tactic now, if you have not already. Google Adwords – Short Term Google Adwords are a quick way to buy clicks and show up on top for competitive keywords.  Use Adwords while you are trying to rank organically.  You will see immediate results, but it is not cheap.  You will pay per click each time someone clicks your search ad, so make sure the landing page they hit is designed properly to convert. I suggest using a Google Certified Partner to execute your Adwords campaigns.  You could waste a lot of money trying to figure out Adwords and how to optimize their keyword phrase matching versus broad match. Facebook Ads – Short Term Facebook advertising is incredible for short term marketing wins.  We have great success running ads targeting custom audiences and interest groups.  Don’t confuse Facebook Ads with boosting page posts though.  I personally feel that page post boost are a waste of money if you are...

Highlights from iMEDIA 2017

by Roxanne Bonilla @

Like our digitally obsessed peers, we were drawn to iMEDIA Social Media Conference like moths to a bright mobile screen. We had so much fun participating and learning all weekend! Here are some of the things that made iMEDIA 2017 so awesome…   The Master Classes Bluetrain was fortunate enough to be involved with both of the master classes on Friday. Roxanne, our Content Strategist, kicked off the morning and joined the Content Strategy Master Class run by Idris Fashan. Later that afternoon, Avery and Bryan had the pleasure of running the Social Media ROI Master Class where they not only enjoyed sharing Confetti Sweets cookies but also passed on some valuable insight on social media goal setting, campaign tagging, and building a dashboard that matters.   The Keynotes Adam Rozenhart and Jennifer Hollett were so well spoken and engaging. iMEDIA gets major props for bringing these two in to drop some truth and knowledge on us. Adam and Jennifer were blunt and to the point during their presentations, which we absolutely appreciated!   The Breakout Sessions While Avery and Roxanne were unable to attend every breakout session (there were just so many awesome ones to pick from), they did divide and conquer and joined a number of fantastic presentations throughout the weekend. A few that stood out were: Creating Bite-Sized Content with Brian Siddle where we learned about planning ahead, setting goals, the importance of video, and Brian’s hate for Caillou. Storytelling Through Media & Social Media with Suzanne Pescod where we learned about voice, the importance of titles, Facebook Live, and so much more. The Dark Side of Social Media with Beverley Theresa where she put poor social media practices on blast and emphasized the need for true engagement over vanity metrics. Podcasts on Podcasts on Podcasts with a very knowledgeable panel who talked about what it takes to start a podcast and the different levels of a podcast that someone can have (e.g. super professional with fancy equipment vs. buying a mic and mixing it on Garage Band).   The Food You know what they say… The first prerequisite of elaborate mental exercise is a full stomach. When we think conference, we usually think muffins, bagels, and sandwiches (a.k.a. all the carbs). iMEDIA took it one step further by serving tacos for lunch on Saturday, complete with adorable cake pops for dessert and buttery popcorn later that afternoon. Yum! Thank you, iMEDIA!   The Swag In true digital media fashion, all orders were processed online. It was an easy shopping experience and picking up your items at the swag table was made even more enjoyable due to their super friendly volunteers! Other goodies we left with included some socks from The Promo Addicts (#PromoYEG) in exchange for joining their mailing list. Our feet are so warm and toasty now!   The Details It’s all in the details. iMEDIA was decked out from top to bottom with adorable details that showed conference-goers just how much the organizers care about this event (and likely how much fun they had planning it too).   The Community There were plenty of networking opportunities at iMEDIA 2017. We really enjoyed meeting so many people from Edmonton’s marketing and entrepreneurial community who are equally as obsessed with social media as we are! Everyone was so enthusiastic about the conference and all that it had to offer. The live Twitter feed was a nice touch as well. It really got people engaged with the hashtags and gave us a platform to share tidbits of knowledge from the weekend.    iMEDIA truly outdid themselves this year. From the quality of the keynotes and presenters to the funky and unique details, this is not an event to be missed!

10 Actionable Content Marketing Tips for 2017

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

If you’re a part of any business in 2017 and you are trying to market it, you most certainly need to know the importance of content. There are plenty of effective ways to use content to market small businesses in different industries. But most of these ways have certain hacks which ensure that the content which finally goes out in the market for your business, is not only high quality but also interesting and engaging. Promote the Blog Content on Facebook, but intelligently If you’re going to create a standalone blog for your business, you probably would also want to have a Facebook page to drive traffic to both your blog and website. The most popular social media platform can help you promote your content and grow your audience, if you use effective tactics and ensure to use these tactics in your content creation and marketing. Have a Unique Social Media Strategy There are also some lesser-known ways you can promote your business on social media. One of them is to have a unique social media strategy. In the environment of so much noise around you, it is extremely important that your content and strategy creates a distinct image for itself. Hence, refer to all tactics available in the sphere but ensure you create your own strategy at the end which is customized to your offering. Don’t Be Afraid to Take Risks with SEO Tactics Not every marketing tactic you try is going to be a sure thing. In fact, some can be rather risky, but also offer potentially high rewards. Hence make sure you always take a calculated risk with whatever you try with SEO tactics. Consider the Technical Benefits of Content Marketing Of course you should create quality content because it’s great for your readers. But there are...

Quantum Celebrates Two Decades in Advertising

by Josh Hampton @ Quantum Communications | Advertising + Marketing Agency | Louisville, Kentucky

Yep, you read that right. 2014 marks our platinum anniversary, can you believe it? And it all began with a dream and a sub-subleased space on the fourteenth floor of the Citizen’s Plaza building… In 1994, Jim Miller, Patty Marguet and Linda Schuster left their jobs at prominent Louisville agencies to start their own company. Their vision was to create a different kind of advertising firm, focused on respect for clients, integrity of work, and quality of life for its employees. Originally the three owners made up the entire creative and account services staff. Oh, and there was Sydney, the Australian cattle dog. She helped tear up the delivery boxes for trash day. Over the next few years Quantum’s client list and staff continued to grow until a new workspace was in order. So in 1997 they moved to the office that many of our clients will remember fondly, on West Main Street, right next to the Slugger Museum and above Kentucky Mirror & Plate Glass Company. But after 12 years of downtown parking hassles and the occasional raccoon infestation (ask us about that one some time!), the Q moved to Story Avenue, where we currently reside. And all these twenty […]

5 Website Development Experts You Need on Your Team

by Bryan Smith @

Building a website is very much like building a house. It takes a lot of planning and preparation and requires a crew of skilled workers to build it. When done right, they both result in something that is built to last and perform. If not, they can fall flat. When I hear about website developments or redesigns, I often see the same mistake happen repeatedly—neglect to hire a full crew of experts. Like a home build, a website requires many different skill sets to build it properly. I believe this mistake happens not because of a desire to cut corners, but because of a lack of clarity around the value each crew member brings to the project. So, while it may not be exhaustive, here’s a list of some of the key experts (in my opinion) to have on your website development or redesign team and how to get the most out of their role: 1. The Web Designer This person is responsible for the look and layout of the website. They are similar to a graphic designer in their creativity, but they design specifically for online functionality. This person will create wireframes and mockups to show what the site will look like. They are also responsible for creating the design elements and selecting the imagery to implement into the website. The value of this person is obvious. At a minimum, they should deliver a visually appealing website that aligns with the organizational brand and modern design trends. To get even more out of this role: Make sure the designer creates mock-ups of mobile and tablet versions for your site as well as a desktop version. Moving forward, the mobile design will likley be more crucial to business success online than desktop. Ensure the Web Designer knows the target audience, the business outcomes you expect from your site, and the most important calls to action so that the site is designed to support these priorities. 2. The SEO Expert A critical role in website development is that of the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Expert (yes, I may be a bit biased here). Without this role, a beautiful and perfectly developed website might not ever be seen. This would be like building a magnificent custom home and never sending out the invites to your Open House party. The SEO Expert provides valuable guidance on everything from information architecture to content to technical setup to analytics, and is responsible for how the website performs to meet business goals once it’s launched. To get the most out of this role: Involve the SEO Expert from the very beginning when you’re first planning your website. Make sure this person works closely with the other team members to ensure SEO best practices are in place so the site can deliver on the desired business outcomes. My tip is to ensure there are recurring ‘all party’ calls/meetings to check-in and discuss the website progress and avoid any work happening in silos (to avoid rework). 3. The Copywriter The Copywriter fills the pages of a website with content that is engaging and relevant to visitors. When done well, content is one of the most essential elements of a website and will play an important role in pulling people through the website, persuading them to set up an account, or compelling them to share what they’ve read with others. The Copywriter should be armed with the brand guidelines of the organization to ensure that they write in the proper ‘voice’ of the organization. To get the most out of this role: Make sure the Copywriter knows who the primary audience personas are for the website so that the content is written with the reader in mind (user intent). Provide the Copywriter with keyword/topic research and audience intent from the SEO Expert to incorporate into the content to enhance the ‘search friendliness’ of the site. Connect this person with the designer and the SEO Expert to ensure the content is laid out properly on each webpage and has the right length and word count to both read well and look great. 4. The Developer This role is what takes all the output from the other roles and turns it into a fully-functional website. The Developer will recommend a Content Management System (CMS) for the website and will complete all the necessary coding. Prior to going live, the Developer will also test the site to ensure everything is working as it’s supposed to (ex. speed, mobile, browsers) and will conduct the necessary fixes until it’s ready to go. To maximize this role: Make sure it is clear why they have selected the CMS they’ll be working on and ensure that it can be easily maintained after the site is launched or that you’ll be given training so you can update it yourself. Confirm what the ongoing costs will be for the website so there are no surprises down the road. Ensure the Developer and the SEO Expert are both involved in the analytics for the site so that you end up with reports that will track the business outcomes you specified for your site. There are often simple analytics and SEO plugins for each CMS; however, out of the box they won’t necessarily do the things that are specifically important to your business, which will make it difficult to assess whether your website is performing the way you need it to. 5. The Webmaster Every site requires ongoing monitoring and maintenance following a website development or redesign. CMS upgrades, backups, site outages, broken links, domain registrations, software updates, and changes to copy will all come up at some point, so make sure you know who will be responsible for addressing them. Sometimes companies that build websites also offer ongoing maintenance or will provide training to you or your staff. But they may also view their role as complete the second the website is launched. To set this role up for success: Make sure you’re clear on responsibilities and expectations and […]

Our strategy focused on key fundamental elements: Landing page optimization for conversions Organic search traffic for event based keywords Pay Per Click Campaigns targeting local customers ready to book First step was redesigning their lead capture page.  Here is a before and after screen shot of each.   Next step was keyword search engine optimizing their landing pages for Google organic search.  We focused on different occasions like baby showers, rehearsal dinners, birthdays, etc.   In this example we captured both our Adwords campaign and the top ranking spot for the organic search. Once the organic search results reached the top spot, we added negative keywords in the Adwords campaign to save money from wasting clicks on keywords we already rank best.     The results – 850% Increase in Leads Steam Pub & Restaurant now averages over thirty leads every thirty days and growing.  March is on pace to have over 40 leads.

Enabling even starters to build their websites in an easy manner, Wix is a website building platform which has the drag-and-drop feature making website simple for novices. With multiple templates to select from, Wix offers straightforward ways of editing site layouts for those who are not adept with website building or coding. WordPress and Wix are extensively different as Wix provides a visual platform allowing even new users who have never built websites to build and maintain their own websites. According to claims, Wix is the most user-friendly website building platform that foregoes the hassles of learning program and provides for an easy opportunity to people to start their websites. It appeals to people to be able to build a website with visual drag-and-drop tools and thus, there is a continuous growth in the number of business opting to use wix to build their website. Many starting bloggers and entrepreneurs especially use Wix due to the ease of using the platform. As long as you are willing to use .wix.com attached to your domain, you can set up your website for free. However, you may need your own domain as in case of a company website in order to cement your brand’s integrity. While many new entrepreneurs and bloggers appreciate the idea of Wix, there are also recurring complaints about the service from past customers. The question then is that is Wix only for hobby bloggers or equally well for building business websites? Platform Restrictions While Wix may be incredibly easy to use, it also has its limitations. You cannot change layouts, input advanced platform codes, or set up SEO tools. Also, plugins which are commonly found in web building platforms like WordPress cannot be integrated with a wix website. Even when you choose the additional plug-ins against payment, the...

Is your SEO agency a hero or a bum just taking money?

by Brian Nagele @ SEO Digital Group

There are many self proclaimed SEO guru company’s, consultants and agencies out there.  So how do you cut through the crap and figure out if your agency is working on your interests or just their monthly check? I’m not claiming to be the best at digital marketing.  I am constantly learning and improving my craft to be the best I can be. Having said that, I have been running into a tremendous amount of businesses that already have an “SEO Guy” when I meet with them.  Fair enough. Already have an “SEO Guy”? Investigate here to see if your website SEO Guy is helping your business or not. We all need Search Engine Optimization and I’m glad you took the first step to doing something about it.  Its essential to most of our businesses in acquiring new customers. Do you wonder if its working?  Do you know how to see if your “SEO Guy” is doing a good job? I need to also say, SEO is a long term solution.  Rising in ranks rarely happens over night, it usually takes a few months.  If your SEO Guy just started a few weeks ago, give them another month or so to get moving.  Its a lot of up front work for the first few weeks.  Then it picks up steam in month three to six, if properly set up.   Here is my 3 step test for your current SEO agency   Most websites I come across only rank for their own business brand name.  Not their service offerings for which customers are searching. This blog post covers just the very basics of SEO and not all the facets involved to competitively rank your website.  If you are paying an “SEO Guy” and do not pass this test, time to shop for another “SEO...

With CMS Comes Great Responsibility

by Josh Hampton @ Quantum Communications | Advertising + Marketing Agency | Louisville, Kentucky

Content Management Systems (CMS) have changed the face of websites, no doubt about it. Where in the past clients had to rely on their web agency or a programmer to make even the smallest changes to their sites, now CMS makes many changes as easy as editing a Microsoft Word document. However, this increased access and control can also bring a few pesky (but easily avoidable) challenges. The most prevalent of these is changing content without thinking about how it might alter the design, layout and look of the site. At the Q, we spend a lot of time making sure your site looks great and functions perfectly before it’s launched. We want all the pieces to fit together. We want the best keywords to be included in the copy in all the right places. However, sometimes with a CMS component what may seem like a simple change can end up being a big one that can alter a site’s look, feel and function. Here are a few guidelines we suggest our clients keep in mind when making revisions and additions on their own: When changing copy, take into account how much copy will fit in the space you’re working […]

Why Data is Important in Content Marketing?

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

Haven’t we all associated the idea of all types of marketing with creativity, with no exception of content marketing? Contrary to this belief of content marketing being merely an art, it is in fact one of the most data-driven form of marketing that exists. You can track more data of the results of your marketing techniques when opposed to television or radio marketing. You have records for all the visitors to your website and you know what did they do on your site and from where did they land on the website page. It is then up to you to use this data to your benefit. That is where most content marketers fail to perform, in analyzing and optimizing the use of this data. However, if not for the data, you’d never know what about your technique succeeded and which is the better way for you to grow. While it is your personal choice whether or not to use the data, however, it is a vain idea to leave any potential profit unattended.   Here is why data plays an important role in content marketing.   Learn from other company’s campaigns With tools like BuzzSumo that help you know how well a certain piece of content marketed on social media performed, you will be able to collect data about what marketing technique is working for other businesses. With various other resources and tools like Ahrefs , you can collect any backlink data and you would know what lent the success to the marketing technique in collecting links. It would, however, be incorrect to depend only on this data and not on the actual effort put in the content, since that plays a major role too. However, you might be able to figure the type of content and the marketing techniques...

Developing Brand Identity For Small Business

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

Every business, big or small, can develop for itself a personality or a brand voice to draw potential customers in better numbers. Your aim behind developing your brand voice lies mostly in making people remember your service or product when they need a solution for a problem. Companies that are able to build this brand image and continually make their consumers rely on their services without fault get rewarded with repeat customers and business.   You might be wondering how to build a dynamic brand identity for a small business? Here are ways to build a flourishing brand identity for your small business   Create a Stunning Logo Visually appealing logos that represent a brand’s best attributes are the most relied option for strong brands. In order for your business to be at the front of the customer’s mind, the logo must be eye-catching such that a mere mention reminds them of you. This immediate reconnection with your brand logo reminds them instantly of what your business represents and what they best like about the services you have to offer.   Stay on Top of Your Social Media Presence The key to building brand identity today is Social Media. You must ensure that your business has active presence on almost all social media platforms to enhance your brand identity. Limited yourself to a single platform is also limiting your potential. You may wish to expand to newer platforms catching people’s attention ever so often. Also, inactive pages tend to be a drawback for your brand image. You must ensure that you keep social media platforms updates with relevant and interesting content that conveys to the customer the best your brand has to offer. The content must always be of a nature and feel that is consistent to the company’s image...

Case Study – Sculpere Yoga & Ballet – Lead Generation

by Brian Nagele @ SEO Digital Group

On January 27th, 2017 we ran a 3-day campaign for Sculpere Ballet Body & Yoga Mind, a Yoga and Ballet Studio owned by Cristina Espaillat, located in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia. The campaign objective was to generate leads for a free class that was being offered. We used targeted pay per click facebook ads and a quality landing page for the campaign. The first part of the process is creating a custom landing page, specifically for the campaign. The landing page we created for Sculpere is very easy to navigate, has a clear call-to-action, mobile and desktop friendly, pixeled so we can retarget, and personally branded. If you want to check out the landing page click the image to the left. If are interested in a free yoga class at Sculpere, sign up here.     The next step, we created a couple different ad sets, both targeting women within certain zip codes living in the Northern Liberties area. We split tested an ad set with different zip codes against another ad set with those same zip codes but with added interests to narrow the reach. We also A/B tested the ads against one another, testing the copy, images, headline, and call to action’s within the advertisement to see which ads Cristina’s target market responded best to. An example of one of our ads can be seen here -> Sculpere set a lifetime budget of $25 for the campaign. Within those 3 days, we reached 3,282 people with their ads. On average the cost-per-click was $1. We generated 23 total link clicks, and 8 qualified leads with a very minimal budget. The final budget at the end of the 3 days was $23.34. Cristina paid $2.91 per lead. Most people waste money on Facebook ads because they don’t know the inside secrets. Imagine...

Rank Higher on Google Search with Mobile-First Indexing

by Shauna Heryford @

Mobile has been a key focus of Google’s for quite some time now. It used to be that when consumers prepared to make a buying decision they would flip through the phonebook to find listed companies before choosing one to do business with. That type of research was replaced by internet research, and now the majority of consumers rely on their mobile devices for their online activities. The comScore graph below shows how the number of mobile users surpassed desktop users in 2014. In 2015, the number of mobile searches also surpassed desktop. Google’s mobile-first focus is simply adapting to this global trend. Google’s search algorithms have been focused on mobile internet activity for several years now, introducing a large mobile-friendly push in April 2015 where companies saw a boost if they were deemed mobile-friendly. However, the latest mobile-first indexing goes further to help connect mobile users with the online content they are looking for. What is Mobile-First Indexing? To answer this question, we must first understand how Google works. In simple terms, Google collects information on every webpage and puts it in a massive catalog, also called an index. It uses this index to formulate and display the search results that come up when users submit a query, also known as a Google search. Until recently, Google has primarily collected data and viewed webpages through the eyes of desktop users first and mobile users second. However, in November 2016, Google announced that they will be changing the way they determine search results by moving to mobile-first indexing. In other words, this means Google’s algorithm will no longer base its rankings off your desktop version of the webpage, but rather will use the mobile version. Now, the content showing for your website on mobile devices is the first thing Google will use to determine search results. The desktop version of your website is still important, but it is secondary to the mobile version. Simply put, a webpage with less mobile content and content that is not mobile-friendly will not rank as well. “Mobile-First Indexing means Google’s algorithm will no longer base its rankings off your desktop version of the webpage, but rather will use the mobile version.” Is Your Website Prepared for Mobile-First Indexing? Not only does your website have to be mobile-friendly across devices in how it looks and can be navigated, which is where having a responsive web design comes into play, but the content has to be present too—if it’s not, it will not rank as well. It was quite typical in the past to have less content present on your mobile site, however, this now needs to be re-evaluated. If your site is missing content, your site could now be missing from those search results! How to Improve Mobile SEO? There are three ways to implement a mobile website: 1. Responsive web design This is when your HTML and URLs will stay the same across both sites, regardless of how the user is accessing your content (desktop, mobile phone, tablet, etc.). It will respond to whatever screen size the user is using and display your content in the most user-friendly way. Responsive web design is Google’s favourite design pattern and your best strategy for effective mobile SEO. 2. Dynamic serving This is when you use the same URL regardless of the device, but generate a different version of HTML, meaning a different website design and content for each device type based on what the server knows about the user’s browser. The impact of mobile-first indexing comes into play if your desktop site is significantly different from your mobile site, and your mobile site has less content. You want to make sure your mobile content is optimized and user-friendly. 3. Separate URLs This is when you have different HTML and URLs for each device. Google will try to detect the user’s device and then redirect them to the appropriate page for that specific device. If your website is using dynamic serving or separate URLs, you have to make sure that you’re not missing important content on your mobile site that could interfere with its SEO. You also want to avoid adding large amounts of HTML content markup that isn’t relevant to the specific content of each page on your mobile site. HTML markup on content would include headings, lists, tables, anchors, images, and quotations. Sometimes these elements will make a mobile site less user-friendly. Mobile Optimization If your desktop site is completely mobile-friendly—meaning it has a responsive design, is easy to use on mobile, and has all your key content—then you have nothing to worry about. Google will index your content across both versions of the website the same and without issue. If you’re developing a brand new site, design for mobile content, usability and speed first and your desktop version second. Make sure everything works on your mobile version, including forms, audio and visual, and other key functions. Google also considers a positive or negative user experience when producing search results. Of course, always make sure your content has been optimized for search engine results, use structured data and think local search! Use this mobile-friendly test from Google to see how your website ranks. After entering the URL you want to test, this tool will let you know whether the page is mobile-friendly or not (keep in mind, it isn’t looking at what content you have, it’s just looking to see if what you have is mobile-friendly), and how to fix it if necessary. To do a site-wide mobility test, you can go to your site in Google Search Console > Search Traffic > Mobile Usability. Is your company’s website mobile friendly? If so, does the mobile version have all the same key content as your desktop version? If not, it could be doing a lot more damage than just creating a frustrating experience for users…it could be deterring them from finding you all together. If you have questions or need assistance to ensure both your […]

Conversion Optimization Failure? Are You Sure? Here’s a Boomerang Analogy

by Chris Gregory @ Jacksonville Local SEO Company | PPC & Social Media Services

In boomerang competitions, there are multiple events per competition, each with its own rules and with boomerangs tailored to the parameters of the event. One event is called fast catch, in which a thrower needs to throw and catch a boomerang five times in rapid succession, with the person with the lowest completion time dubbed the winner. Another is trick catch, in which catches must be made with the feet, behind the back, and more. In fast catch, what matters […]

Are Press Releases Still Good for SEO?

In the old, pre-Penguin days of search engine optimization, syndicated press releases were a popular method of link-building. Almost any syndicated press release comes […]

What is Adwords Quality Score & Why Does it Matter?

by Brian Nagele @ SEO Digital Group

We wanted to drop a quick note about Adwords quality score and why it matters so much in your PPC campaigns. Most business owners we speak with have tried adwords.  Most say it is too expensive and doesn’t yield results.  Most have no idea there is a quality score in adwords, nor what it is. In a recent Adwords campaign for a local real estate client, we were able to lower cost per click, which increased total clicks using the same daily budget.  More click for your buck. During the first week of the campaign we optimized the ads and landing pages to the keyword targets.  Once we could see which keywords had the best quality score, we paused the low quality keywords and let the 8-10s take the budget. This simple process lowered our cost per click by 80 cents and we were able to almost double the clicks we received per day at the same $20 budget.   Here are Google’s own words about quality score: About Quality Score Quality Score is intended to give you a general sense of the quality of your ads. The 1-10 Quality Score reported for each keyword in your account is an estimate of the quality of your ads and the landing pages triggered by them. Three factors determine your Quality Score: Expected clickthrough rate Ad relevance Landing page experience So, having a high Quality Score means that our systems think your ad and landing page are relevant and useful to someone looking at your ad. This article explains how Quality Score works. Quality Score is based on past performance data Quality Score is an aggregated estimate of how well a keyword has performed overall in past ad auctions. Based on this data, each of your keywords gets a Quality Score on...

10 Social Media Mistakes your Business should avoid

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

One of the best outlets to promote small businesses in a cost effective manner is Social Media. Social Media has gained traction as a customer service channel, and thus it is unaffordable for small businesses to ignore their social strategy. 10 Social Media mistakes these businesses should avoid while refining the strategy are: Wear the same dress, Different color You would surely not watch one Youtube video on repeat all day, would you? Well, your readers too would expect more variety on their newsfeeds or timelines. No more are consumers limited to frequenting only one social platform and they’d sure despise going through the same post on different platforms all the time. It is important that you ensure that the content you post on each social media site is varied and you do not come across as a repetitive business with limited ideas.   You make business a personal affair While it is the most convenient thing to do, it is also the biggest blunder you’d make. It is important not to mix your personal and business accounts and this mistake even biggies in the industry tend to make. A new account is worth the effort you put in as it will not only help you come across as credible but will also provide your organization with appropriate branding to help readers find out about your business.   Take the gift but no return gift Another social media mistake which turns down your credibility and even potential partners and clients is having people follow you but never following back in return. You must ensure you follow your business associates, clients or fellow thought leaders and may even share their content. Not only will you come across as well connected and collaborative but it will also help expand your audience and...

What a Boomerang Expert Taught Us about Multivariate Testing

by Chris Gregory @ Jacksonville Local SEO Company | PPC & Social Media Services

Barnaby Ruhe is a fan of freestyling during boomerang competitions and is credited with inventing the foot catch. To accomplish this, Barnaby needed to throw his boomerang and then accurately choose where to lie down on the grass to catch his returning ‘rang between his feet. At the time, this seemed radical because everybody knew that boomerangs were caught by hand, but now this catch is incorporated into international rules. He compares that to the Harlem Globetrotter brand of basketball […]

Zero Google Rank to #10 in One Day

by Brian Nagele @ SEO Digital Group

I wanted to quickly share with you some results from a new client we just brought in to our Philadelphia SEO Digital Group portfolio.  Restaurants need lead generation for private events and groups.  It helps fill space and adds tremendous value to their top line revenue.  James restaurant in Center City Philadelphia is no different. The following results are not typical.  Usually it takes time for SEO to kick in and the website to start gaining rank on the first page or two.  On March 16th, we worked our magic on the James Restaurant website and I was pleasantly surprised to see after one day of optimizing their rank jumped from no rank, to #10 on the highest spot.  We are only 10% into our regular SEO program and happy to see immediate results. They are now ranking better than a close competitor, who has a few years lead on them and many more backlinks. We’ll update this post as we improve their SEO and get them ranking for specific keywords which will help generate private dining leads.

Facebook Ads for Business: Maximize Your Budget

by Hannah Martin @

You have stellar Facebook content with awesome creative and excellent copy, but your budget is tight. Follow these tips below and learn how to stretch your dollar to get the greatest return from Facebook paid advertising. Target Your Facebook Ads If you are working with a limited budget, it is important to make sure you’re reaching the right people at the right time. Audiences that know you and have previously interacted with you are more likely to convert than those who are hearing from you for the first time. The beautiful thing about Facebook advertising is it provides you with multiple targeting options that ensure you are able to reach your desired audience. First, target those who know you Utilize custom audiences to target those who actively visit your website and those who visit occasionally. Facebook custom audiences are simple to create and get your product or service in front of those who are most likely to convert. Second, target those who like and engage with you on Facebook Simply add the desired connection type found in the Ad Set menu. Third, target those you haven’t interacted with yet Add specific demographic criteria to narrow down broad geographic audiences into your target market. Finally, create lookalike audiences These can be created from custom or saved audiences and help you reach new people similar to your current audience in the country that you choose. A smaller initial audience size from a good quality source is recommended for replication. Facebook allows you to target 1-10% of the population of your chosen country. The lower the percentage, the greater the similarities between your original audience and your lookalike audience. By creating a lookalike audience you are able to reproduce high converting audiences with new individuals. Optimize Your Ads for Mobile Facebook is consumed primarily on mobile devices (including tablets). In fact, about 85% of the Facebook Ad results at Bluetrain come from mobile. When creating these types of ads, Facebook provides specific mobile design and text recommendations. For the best results, be short and concise with your message and ensure all ads are within the Facebook Ad text requirements since the text on mobile ads will be truncated to fit the smaller screen. Choose Great Visuals Make sure your ad images are relevant, clear, and text-free. Images with text or excessive graphic manipulation do not perform well on mobile devices. Facebook will provide you with a warning during ad creation if they think your image will hinder ad performance. Test Your Facebook Ads on a Mobile Device If you created the ad on a desktop, we recommend previewing it on your mobile device before launching to ensure that it displays correctly. To do this, you will need to access your ad in Ads Manager and select ‘Edit’. Locate ‘Ad preview’ and select the box with the arrow in the top right. Under View on Facebook, select ‘Facebook mobile News Feed’. Refresh your mobile Facebook app, and the ad will appear within 10 minutes (usually within 1 minute) on your newsfeed as a demo. Track Your Progress & Rework Your Ad Keep track of your ad performance and pause your campaign when you are not receiving desired results. Facebook has multiple metrics on which to evaluate performance. Metrics that are worth taking note of include: Impressions How many times your advert was viewed. A baseline metric of which all other metrics can be compared to evaluate ad success. Frequency How many times an individual saw your ad. Monitor frequency rate and try to keep it low. I like to keep it below 4 and will pause and rework ads that are of a frequency of 4 or higher. A high-frequency rate indicates that you are showing your ad to the same individual multiple times which is ineffective if no action is being taken. To decrease frequency, consider expanding your audience or retargeting a different segment. Link Clicks Clicks on the specific action of your ad that landed the viewer to your desired page. If link clicks are low or becoming less frequent, consider rewriting your ad copy to improve your call-to-action. Click Through Rate Percentage of people who saw your ad and took an action. The higher the better! When your click through rate begins to decrease, consider pausing your ad and changing up creative or ad copy since your current content may have lost its appeal. Cost Per Click The cost of each link click. This is determined by dividing the amount spent by the number of link clicks. Amount Spent Total dollar value spent on Facebook advertising efforts. Be sure you are sticking to the budget you initially set. Boost Your Posts To increase the success of your boosted post, ensure that you have allowed enough time to pass for the post to garner organic results before boosting. Boosting a post with engagement increases the success of your ad since it has natural engagement – which always encourages more. Before Posting Your Next Facebook Ad Next time you are on a tight budget, consider the following: Am I reaching those most likely to take action? Am I reaching my audience on the device they interact with most? Finally, am I willing to rework my ad for optimal results? If your company is looking for additional ad support, Bluetrain offers a wide variety of Online Advertising Services.  Contact us today to learn more. Disclaimer: the tips listed in this article are best suited for those actively running Facebook Ads.

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

Do you own a website? Do you take the security of your website critically? If not, then it’s high-time that you start taking it seriously. WordPress site becomes vulnerable to getting hacked with an addition of plugins, themes, custom codes as well as users. There are certain commercial plugins that might appear safe but in actual, they make your website vulnerable. Furthermore, a majority of popular sites that uses WordPress are also vulnerable. So you should consider the safety issues and for this, let us have a look at some commonly referenced security solutions that you should definitely consider: Backup your website as well as your data: Creating backup should be the number one priority. You should back-up your data regularly if you don’t want to lose months of your hard work. There are many fairly priced plugins and services, so you should not leave your site at risk any longer. You can make use of WordPress Backup or Clone Master Plugin. You can also fix a schedule to backup your site regularly after a certain period of time. Scheduled backups ensure that even if your site is compromised, it can be restored back to its previous version prior to the damage. You can opt for automated solutions like VaultPress, BackupBuddy, BlogVault or built-in restore options via WordPressBackup.   Keep your WordPress up-to-date: Updates just don’t come to enhance user-experience and add new features but additionally, it also comes to reduce the risk of vulnerabilities. You should look for updates of WordPress regularly in your dashboard and update it as soon as a new update is available. However, sometimes the updates are not compatible that causes your website to break, so you should always backup your website before updating it. A Beginner’s Guide to Facebook Advertising

by Chris Nation @ Quantum Communications | Advertising + Marketing Agency | Louisville, Kentucky

Facebook is the largest social network in the world, with 1.1 billion users and 25 million active small business pages. Those kinds of numbers mean the potential to reach and engage your customer has never been greater. To help take advantage of this enormous user base, Facebook developed an advertising platform—called simply Facebook Ads—to help businesses, brands and organizations generate more awareness and better reach their target audiences.   1.  Identify Your Audience Much like Google AdWords or Bing Ads, Facebook allows users to finely target their audience by key demographics (age, gender, interests, location) and optimize campaigns for likes, clicks or interactions. For instance, you can target all individuals 18+ that live in the United States who like arts and music. Or you could identify more specific segments, such as women living in the south end of Chicago, age 30 – 50 who like the show Grey’s Anatomy. How? When a user creates a profile on Facebook they are asked to share demographic information. Additionally, the pages they like and the interests they discuss on the site further factor into the Facebook search algorithm. Using this information Facebook can display ads only to the most relevant audiences—and the more […]

2017 Digital Marketing To Do List

by Brian Nagele @ SEO Digital Group

It’s a new year and the world around us changes evermore rapidly when it comes to keeping up with marketing trends and technology for your business. We break down the top items you’ll need to focus on right now to improve your top line revenue this year.   1. Goals – Have a Purpose   This is the #1 area where most businesses fail in their marketing efforts.  It’s like driving your car with no destination in mind.  It’s sounds silly, but a majority of businesses are not planning properly and setting goals, then tracking their progress towards the goals. I’m not just talking about top line revenue goals like, “We need to gross $3 million this year.”  Yes, that’s a goal and it’s a great start, but how are you going to get there?  Especially if you only did $2 million in 2016? So where can you improve? Can we set specific goals to grow the business? Improve marketing and lead generation?  Expand into a new business line?  Target an additional industry with our service offerings? Invest in Facebook Ads or Adwords campaigns for targeted marketing audiences?   2.  Tracking and Return on Investment (ROI)   What is a lead worth to your business?  What is the life time value of your customers? You learned to set your goals above.  Now let’s run programs to meet those goals and track which pieces of the programs are getting the best results, for a profit. If you can see through analytics that spending $10 on a pay per click ad with Facebook generated $200 in business for you, how much would you continue to spend on that Facebook ad?  The answer is “All of it until you are sold out!”  Because it’s working, you can see it in the tracking, so scale it up. ...

The Secrets of Marketing to Seniors As the Baby Boomer generation grows older, the senior age group has become the largest in the US in terms of size and percent of the population. With that share of the market comes great buying power. In fact, today 77% of the country’s wealth is controlled by senior citizens. They’re living longer and becoming more active. That’s why, now more than ever, understanding how and why they buy is critical to any company hoping to maximize their marketing efforts. Build Trust—and a Relationship Seniors like to know what they’re spending their money on. They devote more time researching and planning their purchases than other age groups. That means earning their trust is critical. How do you that? Great customer service is one way. Seminars, workshops and other sponsored events are another. Give them the opportunity to spend time with your brand and get comfortable with it. If they like what they see, they’re more likely to become loyal customers. Referrals Can Make the Difference When compared to other demographics, seniors are more likely to respond to word of mouth and referrals. They put a high value on personal recommendations from people they know. […]

It focuses on investing in marketing products that have been created by established organizations and earning profits on the sales made. Your web-marketing plan can be built with either or both marketing strategies weaved together. In order to make the most of these strategies, it is essential you explore the difference between them:   What is Influencer Marketing? A modern method of sharing platforms and audiences with relevant names or experts in the industry is known as influencer marketing. The last decade saw influencers publishing guest posts for businesses, however they failed to generate the enough web traffic on these guest posts. Popular influencer today have a role to play in their follower’s purchasing decisions. For this purpose, they provide valuable content to their audience that gains them the credibility to play a role in shaping their followers’ decisions. Connecting with influencers has become easier with the onset of Social Media. Infact, even a few minutes may be enough to persuade the influencers to share certain content on their social platforms.   The key to Influencer marketing is to locate these influencer and build a relationship with them such that it is fruitful for both the influencer and your business. If successful, in less than a day you’d be able to gain thousands of views for your product through influencer posts. Normally, the influencers will interact with similar target audience as your business but will not have any competing product or service to...

Why You Still Need Keyword Research

by Shannon Young @

As search engines become more advanced, stuffing a website full of keywords will no longer produce a high Google ranking. That doesn’t mean, however, that you should tear up your Excel spreadsheets (whew). Keyword research is still an important part of the complete breakfast that is a modern SEO strategy. Here’s why! The Benefits of Keyword Research Most people never look past the first search engine results page (SERP) that shows up after their query. In order to capture organic search traffic, it’s crucial that your website ranks highly in the results. Although Google is getting better at understanding user intent and context, search engine algorithms still match query keywords with website content in order to generate the most relevant results for their users. That means that if your website is optimized for the right keywords, you are still more likely to rank highly on SERPs. Here’s a simplified example: Your mom’s birthday is coming up, and you want to buy her some beautiful homemade chocolates as a present. So, you type “artisan chocolate gift box” into Google. Out of all the chocolatiers in your city, only those whose websites use the words “artisan chocolate” and “gift box” will likely show up at the top of the search results. It’s crucial to know exactly which keywords people are using when they are trying to find your product so you can match your content accordingly. How to Do Great Keyword Research: The Basics There are two factors that affect the impact of any given keyword on traffic to your website. 1. Search Volume How many people search for this keyword at all? 2. Competition How many other websites are incorporating this keyword into their content as well? A high search volume means the potential traffic to your site is high. However, keywords with high search volume also tend to have lots of websites vying for top rankings. The trick is to find really specific keyword phrases (also called “long tail keywords”) that have decent volume and low competition so you have the best chance of ranking for them. Does this sound exciting? Pause here and check out our step-by-step guide to long tail keyword research. If you’re ready for a more advanced look at keyword research, press on! How to Do Great Keyword Research: A Deeper Dive The SEO gurus at Moz have gone one step further and put together their own mathematical formula that calculates the potential usefulness of any keyword based on four factors. Two we’ve already seen: 1. Volume 2. Competition/Keyword Difficulty And two more that go a little further: 3. Keyword Opportunity: If you actually type the keyword into a search engine, what opportunities are available on the resulting SERP? Let’s say you wanted to write a blog post about the best workout clothes. You might think Lululemon would be a good keyword. But wait! What happens when you Google Lululemon? Almost the entire SERP is dominated by Lululemon’s own website, the knowledge graph sidebar, and their branded social media accounts. No matter how great your article is, there isn’t room for it to rank against a powerful brand. As an aside, if you want your own website to have sweet subheadings and appear in the knowledge graph, check out our post on data-rich snippets, semantic markup, and schema.org. 4. Importance: How important is a keyword to your client (i.e. the person who knows the most about their own business)? Business owners have a unique understanding of their market, and sometimes they’ll know that a certain keyword or phrase is important to their customers, even if it’s not showing up on traditional keyword research engines like Google’s keyword planner. Just also be aware of ‘ego queries’, which may be more industry competitors search each other rather than customers. We love cold, hard data but it’s also important to listen to people (as this post from Search Engine Land points out). Keyword Research is Awesome, But it’s Not a Magic Bullet The take home message today is that keyword research is still an important way to improve the SERP ranking of your website. Just remember, there are over 200 different factors affecting Google rankings. To supplement your awesome keyword research, make sure you are thinking about semantic markup, 10x content, and other factors that improve your website’s ranking. Agree? Disagree? Think keyword research is dead? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

21 Questions with Joe, Bluetrain’s New Account Manager

by Roxanne Bonilla @

We are proud to introduce Joe, one of our new Account Managers. Learn about this movie-goer’s background in football, his very cool financial blog, and his unexpected guilty pleasure. 1. RB: Where did you grow up? JM: I grew up in Calgary but I was born in Nigeria. RB: How did you end up in Edmonton? JM: I came to Edmonton for school. I was recruited by the U of A for football. RB: Is your family still in Calgary? JM: Yeah. RB: When did you come to Canada from Nigeria? JM: When I was in grade 2. 2. RB: What did you like most about growing up in Nigeria/Calgary? JM: Nigeria I barely remember because it was so long ago. Calgary was nice. I had a regular upbringing. Grew up in a cul-de-sac so lots of neighbours and activities and water fights. 3. RB: Any siblings? JM: Two siblings. RB: Are they in Calgary as well? JM: Yeah. 4. RB: What words would your family use to describe you? JM: Jokester. Laid back. Sporty. RB: You can be our sporty spice! 5. RB: What is your family like? JM: Loving, regular family. Fun. 6. RB: What did you want to be when you were a kid? JM: A football player. I wanted to play in the NFL, but as I grew older I realized I should probably have a back-up plan. Then I fell in love with business and marketing. RB: Do you still play competitively? JM: No. I stopped a couple years ago. RB: Why did you hang up the cleats up? JM: I was on my third or fourth concussion. RB: That’s a good reason to stop! What position did you play? JM: Defensive end. RB: How long did you play? JM: I played since I was in grade 7, but since my family is from Nigeria and soccer is a global sport, I started off playing soccer. RB: Why did you switch? JM: One day I saw football on TV and decided to make the switch! 7. RB: How would you describe your family’s heritage? JM: 100% Nigerian. 8. RB: What made you decide to apply to Bluetrain? JM: I always had an interest in marketing. Digital marketing is a growing industry as well so I thought this could be a great career! 9. RB: Do you have your own personal blog? JM: I do. Another interest of mine is finance and investing. I took lots of classes in school and do a lot of investing myself, so I have an investing blog called Newly Investor for people who want to get into the world of investing. RB: Very cool! 10. Even the Worst Super Bowl Spot Is Better Than None at All

by Josh Hampton @ Quantum Communications | Advertising + Marketing Agency | Louisville, Kentucky

According to USA Today, the lowest rated Super Bowl spot of the over 60 spots aired was a short fifteen-second ad for a mobile game called Heroes Charge. It probably ranked so low because it was utterly forgettable rather than inherently terrible (like that now infamous Nationwide spot), but apparently even the most forgettable Super Bowl ad can mean big business. The day before the Super Bowl, Heroes Charge was ranked as the 899th most downloaded iPhone app in the country. In the days after the ad aired, it shot up to 252nd on the downloads chart and 21st on the top grossing US apps charts. Those are pretty impressive numbers—and ones that can be almost entirely attributed to that single spot. While of course not everyone can afford a spot in the Super Bowl, the takeaway resonates with companies of all sizes (and budgets) interested in building their brands and driving sales—if you want to succeed, you’ve got to get out there and market yourself! Even if you’re not the biggest and best in the field, anything you can do to get your company’s name out there is almost always better than doing nothing at all.

10 SEO Blunders Business Owners make on their Websites

by Dimitri Konchin @ Wisdek Corp.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO can be rather tricky for new and old business owners alike. It is a challenge which when left unattended might hamper your website growth and rankings. With Google having changed how its search algorithms function recently, it is more likely to favor a mobile friendly website in its ranking driven by user behavior. Prevent your SEO strategy from going wrong by focusing on omitting these common SEO blunders most business owners tend to commit Irrelevant Anchor text links The clickable hyperlink text on a web page is known as Anchor text. It serves as food for search engine crawler and is hence a coveted skill if the links are phrased cleverly. It is best to avoid wasting opportunities by attempting to build a link with text like ‘click here’. While it can be incredibly tedious to understand and build anchor text links that include important keywords for better ranking, it is even more important that the anchor text is tailored to avoid suspicion from Google.   Links from non-credible sources Just to have links to and from your sites is not enough. It is important to focus more on quality of building links than simply increasing the quantity. A backlink from an authoritative blog may be a milestone for your ranking and traffic, giving it a major boost. On the contrary, a hundred or even more links from directories might be easy to score but these low quality sources play little or no role on your rankings, if not negative. It is hence best to focus on building links for your website from sources that have a positive image in the similar niche or industry thus helping you land better rankings for your website.   Avoiding Analytics Another blunder most people perform is to entirely...

Selecting Social Media Goals & Metrics

by Bryan Smith @

I sat in a room with a businessman who had reached his breaking point with his under-performing sales team. When asked what he thought the solution was to boost sales, he threw his hands up in frustration and said: “Better get on the Tweeter.” True story. That whole scenario is cringe-worthy, I know. But believe it or not, this social media rookie was on the right track in one critical way…his goal. I doubt he knew how to define who his audience is and engage with them strategically on social media. Let’s be honest, he probably didn’t know how to tweet, post, or tag. But he did understand exactly what he wanted to achieve by engaging on social media—increasing his sales. And because he was crystal clear about his goal, he would then be able to measure whether his social media tactics were hitting the mark. “Only when you’re clear on what you want to achieve will you know what to measure to track your progress.” Measurement can pose a whole new set of challenges for marketers who need to demonstrate the value of social media. So what appears to commonly get in the way and make the task of measuring ROI for social media tricky at best? Here are a few of the biggest challenges that we come across in the market: Overwhelming data: social marketers are overwhelmed with data. With so many social media networks and each network having its own analytics and set of metrics, it’s no wonder marketers are coming up with a fragmented picture of their efforts. Goals & Metric Selection: In addition to excessive data, social marketers also aren’t great at defining goals for social media and selecting the metrics that will help them measure success. Lack of Analytics Training: Social media marketers are also typically not trained in web analytics and don’t know how to properly tag social media campaigns so that they roll up in web analytics in an organized fashion, a crucial part of proving the impact of social. According to Social Media Examiner, “88% of marketers want to know how to measure their return on investment for social media activities.” So the interest is there. But is it translating into better tracking of KPIs and reporting on ROI? Not yet. A CMO Survey found that “only 20.3% [of marketers] are able to prove the impact [of social media] quantitatively.” If you’re in the other 80%, a good starting point is to choose a couple business goals that can be supported through social media and then track the KPIs associated with those goals. Bluetrain recently presented this list of common business goals and the corresponding KPIs at the 2017 iMEDIA Social Media Conference which will help get you on your way. 10 Business Goal Examples for Social Media: Business Goal Example KPIs 1)    Brand Awareness Impressions, reach, amplification1 2)    Website Traffic Number of site sessions, pageviews, avg duration 3)    Community Building Engagement2 & amplification metrics 4)    Event Promotion Number of event RSVPs, amplification 5)    Customer Feedback & Reviews Number of customer reviews, comments, posts, PMs 6)    Customer Support Number of requests, sentiment, response time 7)    Lead Generation Clicks, landing page engagement, form submissions 8)    Content Promotion Amplification, pageviews, inbound links 9)    Sales and Revenue Number of transactions, revenue, ROI, avg value 10) Product Promotion Number of free trials, product inquiries, product-related comments, posts, PMs 1 amplification metrics would include shares, retweets, repins etc. 2 engagement would include likes, comments, replies, favourites etc. In addition to clarifying goals and metrics, using tools like Google Analytics and the analytics tied to the major social media platforms are a great way to track some of the KPIs indicated above. More than likely, if you need to display ROI to management, the next step will be to setup effective reporting to clearly communicate the performance on the selected goals. However, before getting ahead of yourself with reporting, first simply choose one or more goals from the list above and start measuring, and you’ll be well on your way to demonstrating Social ROI, on ‘the Tweeter’, or on any other social media platform your business leverages. You’ll be amazed at the results you can achieve once you’re clear on the business goal(s) of your social efforts.

by Chris Gregory @ Jacksonville Local SEO Company | PPC & Social Media Services

First of all, yes: There really are boomerang competitions and champions! In fact, a member of the DAGMAR Marketing team has met numerous premiere boomerang athletes with international competition titles under their belts and has written extensively about this curved stick that returns. And, although this may be a novel twist on the subject, we’d like to suggest that the primitive crafters of boomerangs were in fact among the earliest conversion optimizers. 21 Questions with Hannah, Bluetrain’s Digital Marketing Associate

by Roxanne Bonilla @

Bluetrain is proud to introduce Hannah Martin, our new Digital Marketing Associate. Learn about the many places Hannah has lived, her surprising favourite food, and her previous job working for a major carbonated beverage company. 1. RB: Where did you grow up? HM: Lots of places! I was born in England, then I lived in Scotland, and I lived in Newfoundland, and I lived in Calgary, and went to school in Vancouver, and now Edmonton. RB: When did you come to Edmonton? HM: I came to Edmonton three years ago, right after university. RB: How long were you in England and Scotland before you came over here? HM: I moved to Canada when I was 11. RB: You don’t have an accent! HM: Oh no, I lost it! I tried to fit in really bad when I came here. 2. RB: What did you like most about growing up in all those places? HM: I liked how it always changed. I liked that there was always something new on the horizon. 3. RB: Any siblings? HM: Yes, one younger sister. RB: Where in the world did she end up? HM: She’s in BC. RB: And your parents? HM: In Calgary. RB: You guys like Canada? HM: YES! Ever since I was little my mom’s goal was to live in Canada. 4. RB: What words would your family use to describe you? HM: I think they’d say I’m funny. I’m pretty sure they laugh AT me not WITH me. They’d say I’m a go-getter as well. 5. RB: What is your family like? HM: They’re nice people. I love my family! They’re the best. 6. RB: When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be an eye doctor. RB: Do you wear glasses? No. RB: So you were just fascinated with eyeballs? HM: Yeah. My dog always had the tear ducts that run so I would always make sure her face was nice and clean. My parents would say, “You’re always poking at her eyes!” RB: Aww, that’s very sweet! 7. RB: How would you describe your family’s heritage? HM: My dad was born in the Philippines, but his ancestry is British so I would probably describe myself as 100 per cent British. I wouldn’t say specifically English because my hair gives me away as Irish and the majority of them come from England at some point in time. 8. RB: What made you decide to apply to Bluetrain? HM: I was looking for a career change. Something different to what I was previously doing. 9. RB: How long were you with Pepsi? HM: I was there just under three years working as an account representative. RB: How did you get into that? HM: I started with them through the University. I was on their campus hire program so I just took another step up the ladder. RB: But you did school in Vancouver… RB: I did school in Vancouver and then they hired me full-time in Edmonton. RB: Oh! So they recruited you in Vancouver and brought you to Edmonton? Gotcha! Do you miss Vancouver? HM: I was going to say I miss the weather but not right now since it’s snowing. RB: And they go into crisis mode when it snows. HM: 1cm of snow and the city shuts down! *both laugh* HM: But I do miss the ocean. I like the sound of it, and the humidity! 10. RB: What do you think about the world of digital marketing? HM: Ever changing and exciting. RB: It IS changing, all the time! That’s for sure. 11. RB: What will you take away from your past work experience that you’ll apply to your current position at Bluetrain? HM: Patience and learning the process. 12. RB: Favourite Food? HM: Hot dogs! Hot dogs are my all-time favourite food. And I know they’re gross, but I love them. I even got a hot dog roller for Christmas! RB: That’s awesome! How often do you eat hot dogs? HM: I’m on my new year’s diet so monthly, but I would have previously said every two weeks. There was one week that I ate a hot dog every single day though… *both laugh* 13. RB: Mushrooms or olives? HM: Neither! It’s all about the texture. If they were both on my pizza, I probably wouldn’t eat the pizza. 14. RB: What do you do to relax? HM: I read and go to the gym – not at the same time though. 15. RB: What is your guilty pleasure? HM: I like chocolate a lot! RB: Dark, white, milk? HM: Regular milk chocolate – Cadbury! 16. RB: Favourite book or movie? I have favourite authors just because the books they write are often very similar. Jody Picoult, and the murder mystery books by James Patterson. RB: And movie? HM: I love Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, but Finding Nemo was better. 17. RB: Do you play volleyball or squash? This is a mandatory question from Bryan. HM: I used to play both but I recently had knee surgery so I’m not cleared to play either. RB: Oh no, what happened? HM: Soccer injury. I tore my ACL and they removed my meniscus as well so I don’t have much going on in there. 18. RB: Summer or winter? HM: I’m not built for either! I’m a Spring/Fall type of person. RB: Do you burn easy? HM: Yes! 19. RB: Tea or coffee? HM: Neither. I like hot chocolate. RB: Nice! You and Faustina will be fighting over all the hot chocolate here! 20. RB: Cookies or cupcakes? HM: Cookies & Cream Cupcakes – best of both worlds! At Confetti Sweets they actually have cupcakes with the cookies on top of them! RB: Awesome! Why choose?! HM: Why deprive yourself?! 21. RB: When is your birthday? HM: August 26th RB: Summer baby!

21 Questions with Matt, Bluetrain’s Digital Marketing Strategist

by Roxanne Bonilla @

Bluetrain is proud to introduce Matthew Brown, our new Digital Marketing Strategist. Learn about Matt’s experience in the digital marketing world, his lovely family, and his hilarious hate for olives. 1. RB: Where did you grow up? MB: Sherwood Park. RB: Have you been here your whole life? MB: I moved away when I was 18-ish, lived in Calgary for a while and Victoria for two and a half years, then back to Edmonton to go back to school. RB: What did you go to school for? MB: I went to MacEwan for Digital Arts & Media 2. RB: What did you like most about growing up in Sherwood Park? MB: Small community feel with connection to the big city. RB: Did you get into the city lots? MB: Yeah, I experienced Whyte Ave when I was 14 years old. My friends and I used to bus down there every weekend in the summer. 3. RB: Do you have any siblings? MB: Yes, one sister. RB: Is she in Sherwood Park? MB: No, she is in Morges, Switzerland. RB: So exotic! Have you been? MB: No, my daughter has though! RB: Did she like it there? MB: Yes! She spent a summer there. They travelled all through Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. My daughter’s favourite was Milan. RB: Why’s that? MB: Mostly the shopping. 4. RB: What words would your family use to describe you? MB: Probably stoic, quiet, calm, and reserved. 5. RB: What is your family like? MB: Evolving as my kids get older. They used to be so quiet but they’re coming out of their shells now. We joke, tease each other, and laugh. We’re a family that spends a lot of time together. 6. RB: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you became a grown up? MB: A firefighter. RB: Did you ever tour a hall? MB: I did not, but one of the first places I lived after getting married was in the river valley close to the fire fighter’s training hall. RB: So you were close. MB: Funny enough, we’d see them out there practicing when we walked around the neighbourhood… Along with all the housewives sitting on their front step watching the guys run around. 7. RB: How would you describe your family’s heritage? MB: On my side of the family, my sister and I are adopted and my father is also adopted and his two brothers were adopted too. So, we’ve always struggled with our identity because of that and I don’t know a lot about my family history…. English-Scottish I would guess. My wife is also adopted! Our children are our first blood relatives. Her background is primarily Scottish, Swedish, and Norwegian. RB: Have you travelled over there? MB: No, one day we’ll tour that area though! Scotland for sure and England because it’s England. 8. RB: What made you decide to come work with Bluetrain? MB: The thing that attracted me to Bluetrain is that it was a different take on an agency—more focused and specific, and in an area that I think has a lot of potential and opportunity. 9. RB: Do you have your own personal blog? MB: I do not, but I used to do a lot of writing! I was part of a user group for digital signage which was part of the Digital Signage Expo Advisory Group. I was part of their End User Council. There would be a monthly question that I would write an answer for. RB: Are there any questions you remember that stood out? MB: None that stand out specifically but once a year the expo would put on their annual conference and I’d get to meet the other advisory members. It was neat to hear from them that they were reading my articles and getting a lot out of them. These experts coming to me and telling me how much they enjoyed it. RB: Very cool! 10. RB: What do you think about the world of digital marketing? MB: I am a firm believer in the opportunity of digital marketing, but I am also an advocate for being responsible with it! I think it’s really easy for companies and brands to get caught up in the hype and I think it’s important—especially for agencies—not to take advantage of that. RB: How many years have you been working in the industry? MB: Almost 17. RB: When did you decide to get into digital instead of firefighting? MB: When I went back to school I actually wanted to be a photographer but there were some prerequisites I had to take first. During the prerequisite was when I found out about the digital media program, so I caught the digital marketing bug in the prerequisites. 11. RB: What do you take away from your past work experience that you’ll apply to your current position at Bluetrain? MB: Having worked in both agencies and as part of an internal team, I have empathy on both sides. I want to bring an understanding from a client perspective, what their needs are and what their pain points are as well. 12. RB: What is your favorite food? MB: That’s a tough one. I like a lot of food! It depends really. I go through moods and swings. Right now, I would say Korean food. RB: Do you make it at home or go out to get it? MB: Mostly make it at home. My daughter is celiac so we do a lot of cooking because of that. RB: Home cooked food is the best! MB: One thing we’re discovering through this is that Asian food is really celiac-friendly! 13. RB: Speaking of food, mushrooms or olives? MB: Mushrooms. Olives are the devil’s fruit. There’s not much food I don’t like, but generally, I avoid olives. 14. RB: What do you do for fun? MB: Hang out with the fam and play soccer. Soccer has been a lifelong passion. If I could, […]

My Complicated Relationship with No Longer Being CEO

by rand @ Rand's Blog

It’s been 22 months since I stepped down as the CEO of Moz and turned over the role to my longtime Chief Operating Officer and close friend, Sarah Bird. Since then I’ve recovered from depression, traveled to and keynoted dozens of events, started (and now nearly completed) a new product with a small team at Moz, and kept […]

Punch Up Your Copy (and Search Ranking) with SEO Keywords

by Josh Hampton @ Quantum Communications | Advertising + Marketing Agency | Louisville, Kentucky

By know, the importance of search rankings is common knowledge. If you want your audience to find you on the web, you’ve got to pay attention to optimizing your site. But implementing SEO can be a daunting task for those who don’t know much about programming. In fact, we always recommend seeking the help of an SEO professional to take full advantage of all the benefits of optimization. There is, however, a more accessible way to get the SEO ball rolling—add keywords to your copy. It’s one of the simplest things you can do to help boost your rankings. You don’t need a programmer. You won’t have to learn the complexities of back-end coding. With just a little thought and research, you can make an impact—and here’s how. Keywords Are Your Friends Nearly everyone knows how to use a search engine like Google or Yahoo. You type in a few words that you think best describe what you’re looking for, then you let the search engine do its thing. Search engines find what you’re looking for by seeking out those words on relevant websites. So to stack the odds in your favor, make sure those popular search terms—whatever your audience […]

Linda Schuster featured on StyleBlueprint

by Josh Hampton @ Quantum Communications | Advertising + Marketing Agency | Louisville, Kentucky

By Heidi Potter, StyleBlueprint Photo by Adele Reding “Linda Schuster is tiny, but don’t let her stature fool you. Her marketing firm, Quantum Communications (or Q the Agency), services clients such as Brown-Forman, The University of Louisville and YUM! Brands, just to name a few. This woman is connected and committed to Louisville. Running her portfolio and raising a family definitely keep her on her toes, but this self-proclaimed foodie always manages to try the latest local restaurant. Welcome today’s FACES profile, Linda Schuster. What made you decide to go into public relations as a career? I was an accounting major in college and bored to death working in an accounting firm my junior year. So I called my dad and said I was switching majors! I decided to do an internship at an agency in Austin for fun. I loved it and here I am. How long have you owned your own business? 21 years What kind of advice would you have given yourself 20 years ago? I don’t think anyone can tell you what it’s going to be like to own your own business. It’s both rewarding and frightening every day. Mostly rewarding. I guess I would say get […]

21 Questions with Roxanne, Bluetrain’s Content Strategist

by Shauna Heryford @

I’m excited to play 21 Questions this week with Roxanne Bonilla, the newest content strategist and member to the Bluetrain team. Learn about Roxanne, her love of Edmonton, and why she transitioned from fitness to communications. SH: Where did you grow up? RB: I was born and raised in Edmonton – West Edmonton to be exact. I now live on the south side. SH: Does that mean you were a West Edmonton Mall ‘mallrat’? RB: (Laughing) Yes it does! I spent time there when it didn’t look as nice as it does now. SH: What did you like most about growing up in Edmonton? RB: Definitely the people – my family and friends. This is why I have stayed. I also love the variety in Edmonton – there is always something to do! SH: Any siblings? RB: Yes, I have one brother – a year younger. SH: What words would your family use to describe you? RB: Hmmmm, I think they’d say energetic and goofy! I’m usually the one keeping the conversation flowing in my family. SH: What is your family like? RB: We’re pretty close. I live a few blocks away from my Mom’s and we do regular Sunday night dinners. SH: When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up? RB: Wanted to be a marine biologist (loves the water and dolphins) and nutritionist. SH: Hmmm, I imagine tough to be a marine biologist and still live around here! RB: (Laughs) Yes! SH: How did you end up going into fitness? RB: Fitness is a big part of my family’s culture – my mom and dad actually met at the gym! I like being physically active and always enjoyed sports growing up – I played soccer, did cheerleading, skiing and snowboarding, was a lifeguard, and danced competitively. SH: What made you leave fitness for PR and Communications? RB: The work hours in fitness were are all over the place.  I was exposed to communications doing social media for Backside Tours and liked the idea of combining the structure of an office setting with the creativity of writing. SH: Do you have your own personal blog? RB: I started one years ago but haven’t uploaded anything in a long time! It’s in the “positive news” category (kind of like Upworthy). My first piece was inspired by a man named Joseph who would sit on his walker at a four-way stop close to my old place and smile and wave to people driving by. His dedication to spreading positivity was adorable and I would always give him the biggest wave back! When I was moving I went to say goodbye to him and let him know that he always brightened my day with his waves. SH: What do you think about the world of digital marketing? RB: Fascinating, with technology these days it is one of the most effective ways of getting your message out there! SH: What do you take away from your past work experience that you’ll apply to your current position at Bluetrain? RB: Well, editing for sure since I’ll be working with copywriters. Persona creation, market research and understanding the target audience I’ll also use. I enjoy working on communication and marketing plans, planning and strategizing, and looking at and considering all angles. SH: Favorite Food? RB: Pizza! There can be so much variety to this dish! A Friday night ritual at my house is ordering a Massimo pizza from the Italian Centre and enjoying a night off from cooking. SH: We have much debate over this next question – mushrooms or olives, which would you pick? RB: Both! SH: What do you do to relax? RB: Epsom salt baths (multiple times a week!), yoga, and long walks during the summer. SH: What is your guilty pleasure? RB: Reality TV like The Bachelor/Bachelorette. SH: Me too! Did you know we do a Bachelorette pool? RB: Oh my, this is a dream job! SH: Favourite book or movie? RB: I can tell you both! Book is The Alchemist and movie is Out Cold (it’s a snowboarding cult classic). I know it word-for-word from watching it on bus trips home from the mountain. SH: What bus do you take? RB: Either Backside Tours to Revelstoke or Fernie, or the Magic Bus to Marmot.  I also get rides with friends that have bigger vehicles than I do, and sometimes even fly to places like Kelowna to ride Big White and Silver Star – it’s safer than driving! SH: Do you play volleyball or squash? This is a mandatory question from Bryan we ask everyone new. RB: I’m terrible at volleyball, please don’t make me do it! I would let you guys down for sure! I like squash – it is fun and a good workout. I haven’t played in a while though. SH: Great – Bryan is always happy to have someone to play squash with! SH: Mountains or Beach? RB: Mountains for sure! SH: Tea or Coffee? What is your caffeine fix? RB: BOTH – I couldn’t live without either!  What I pick depends on how tired I am and if I got enough sleep. Over the past few years I have become more of a coffee connoisseur – my boyfriend is into coffee and now I’m a coffee snob! Kicking Horse is one of my favourites! SH: I’ll have to give it a try as I love coffee! SH: Another important question – cupcakes or cookies? RB: Cookies! They are probably my second favourite food. Just like pizza, there is so much variety to them! There are even breakfast cookies (laughs). SH: You’re lucky as Confetti Sweets is close by so we have it quite a bit! RB: Oh good I love Confetti Sweets! SH: Speaking of cupcakes or cookies – when is your birthday? RB: April 25th SH: Any pet peeves we should know about? RB: A big one for me is when people don’t wear helmets. I always harass my […]
