11 steps to Keyword Research that will boost your organic search traffic

by Akash Srivastava @ Akash Srivastava

Keyword research is one of the important SEO strategies. During the early days of my career, I used to perform keyword research in a typical way by going to the keyword tool and type in a few words and get a big list. That was really a quick and simple technique but was much effective. Today, SEO has changed a lot and keyword tools have been upgraded also. After lot of hard work and effort, I discovered some effective ways to get keywords that will boost your organic search traffic. A solid keyword research process helps you improve the entire SEO strategy. Here are 11 steps to keyword research that will boost the organic search traffic. Let’s get started ………    Get organized The first and foremost thing to do is set up a template on Google Spreadsheet to run the keyword research process throughout your professional life. Create a blank spreadsheet by signing into Google sheets and fill the headers with relevant headings. Freeze the top row to ensure that the header is not treated as data. Use this guide to create a powerful recurring process document later. Populate the guide with easy, medium and hard keywords that are going to change your SEO game. This guide will keep track of the basic information. You can start including local & global searches, keyword analysis information etc using Google Keyword Planner, Moz, SEMrush, Ahrefs etc as you take the keyword research to an advanced level.    Brainstorm keywords Many people make the mistake of filling the spreadsheet with all those keywords that strike their mind. Even I used to do the same. Later, I realized that — it just fills the spreadsheet and the keywords I filled are of not much use. Based on my personal experience, I advise you...

This in turn has given rise to the development for the websites which cater to the needs of the mobiles and ensure faster processing. Though a number of new techniques have been integrated to improve the user experience but still there is something which is affecting the mobile search results. Google realized this aspect and introduced a fresh way of creating web pages for mobiles. This is known as AMP or more popularly Accelerated Mobile Pages. AMP is a framework via which you can easily create web pages which not only load faster but enhance the user experience as well. The announcement of this framework was made last October but now the framework has been launched a few days back. Though a lot of technologies have been used for creating mobile sites, then what is so different about AMP or how it will prove beneficial. Before going deep into the topic, let us first make ourselves familiar with the AMP. What is AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages)? As already said above Accelerated Mobile Pages is used for creating web pages which have faster loading time and provide excellent optimization. The end motive of introducing such a framework is to enhance the speed and make sure that the users are able to enjoy a faster browsing experience. But special emphasis is given to the fact that there no compromise will be made when it comes to offering the primary web experience to the mobile users. How to get started? Fred Update: A new unconfirmed Google algorithm shakes the SEO world

by Akash Srivastava @ Akash Srivastava

The SEO industry has been watching a new unconfirmed Google algorithm called ‘Fred Update’, as it seems to target the link quality aspects of search engine ranking. As soon as Google Fred update spotted rolling out, many content driven sites that are in blog or content format were hit by this update. Most of the sites, those were hit, show the same type of content on various topics — written for ranking purpose. Moreover, the sites have affiliate links and ads in large number. It has been found that most of these sites are not expert sites and do not add much value to what other expert sites have already written. In most of the cases, the content is wrapped around ads, and it is very difficult to differentiate these ads from the content. Some of these sites have a fewer or no ads, but they generate revenue through lead generation and affiliate links. After reviewing all these sites, it was found that 95% of these sites have two things in common. The first is low-quality content and the second is heavy ad placement. It seems that many of these sites were created with the purpose of generating revenue and do not benefit the user in any way. Google has not yet confirmed anything about Fred Update, but I believe that Google is going to take a big step against low-value content sites that were meant to generate revenue using heavy ads. Let me know your thought in the comment section.

How to boost site’s SEO by optimizing Google’s crawl budget

by Akash Srivastava @ Akash Srivastava

I receive many questions about SEO regularly and answered hundreds of questions. Recently, one of my clients asked me “How to boost site’s SEO by optimizing Google’s crawl budget?” Well, there is a lot more to know about SEO. There are many things that affect the rank of your site. One such thing is ‘Google Crawl Budget’. It is important for webmasters to know how search engines interact with their website. If you understand crawl budget, you can use some techniques to make sure that your site gets crawled effectively. The concept of crawl budget was like a guessing game among SEOs. You will first need to familiarize yourself with the term ‘Googlebot’. Googlebot is nothing but Google’s spider that discovers new and updated pages to be added to Google index. Before I go into detail, let’s start with what Google’s crawl budget is and how it helps you boost your site’s SEO? What is Google crawl budget? Google crawl budget is one of the SEO concepts that are overlooked by many SEO experts. As it is not very well understood by online marketing professionals, they often ignore it. Search engines use crawler bots to crawl across web pages and find information about them — based on which they add them to their index. These spiders detect links on pages they visit and attempt to crawl across those pages also. The number of times a search engine crawls across your web page in a given time is known as crawl budget. The whole idea behind Google crawl budget is to know how ‘Googlebot’ crawls your site. Small business owners should not worry about crawl rate. However, if you are running a large website, you should optimize crawl budget for SEO success. Here are some tips to optimize crawl budget that...

Google To Create Separate Mobile Search Index To Enhance User Experience

by Akash Srivastava @ Akash Srivastava

Finally, Google is going to create separate mobile search index for its search engine to enhance user experience, which will become the primary one. This means, all the latest changes in ranking and content will first be applied to mobiles, instead of desktop. This change improves the user experience for mobile users drastically. However, SEO experts say that many people are still using desktop and it won’t be fair to them. Google webmaster trends analyst, Gary lllyes made an announcement about this in a keynote address at a digital marketing conference held in Las Vegas. There is no clear information about what will happen to the desktop index, once mobile index will become primary. We can expect the change to take place by the end of the year. This change is essential as different mobiles sites operate and handle information from a different perspective. Google announced with the idea of working with mobile index last year itself. Since then, Google decides that mobile index makes a great sense and enhances the user experience. However, it is still unclear that how mobile index will work. We don’t still have answers to questions like – Whether it will have mobile friendly content only? Will it not be used for desktop queries? How the desktop index will be? Though desktop is a minority of Google queries, it still generates significant amount of usage. The main objective of Google behind launching mobile index is —- Run its ranking algorithm in different ways across mobile content, instead of using the current method of extracting data from desktop content. According to Gary lllyes – the desktop index may remain active, but with just a few updates. It seems that Google is moving forward with it and has been streamlining its mobile search capabilities. Earlier in 2015,...

5 SEO Metrics You Should Be Tracking (But Probably Aren’t)

by Akash Srivastava @ Akash Srivastava

Many SEO experts like me have a constant feel of uncertainty, regardless the experience and skills. Despite of spending hours, weeks and months in SEO, it is hard to see if the results are worth the time we spent. There is no way to evaluate the outcome of your efforts, other than tracking the results. This is where you need SEO metrics. However, you cannot evaluate the outcome of your efforts by using a single SEO metric. There are a set of SEO metrics that help you track the performance of your SEO efforts. As the search engines are constantly updating their algorithms, it may be hard for SEOs to know which SEO metrics are important at that moment. I have tried dozens of SEO metrics to determine why only a few SEO strategies work and others don’t. Here are the top 5 SEO metrics to watch at this moment. It would be of great use if could watch all of these SEO metrics.   Keyword ranking SEO keyword ranking metric is used to measure the search engine rankings for targeted keywords and analyze the changes in ranking. This is one of the essential metrics that demonstrates the effectiveness of your website. You can determine if your website is getting high rank on Google or not. You should know that the top 3 listings receive the majority of clicks on search engine results. The keyword ranking metric is very helpful in pointing out the positive as well as negative impact of SEO efforts. Tracking keyword ranking is of much importance and should be stressed more. If you are not yet tracking the keyword ranking, you are losing your money. Search engines are bombarded with billions of searches related to products, services, answers etc. Use Google webmaster tools that tell you...

Google finally confirmed Penguin 4.0 algorithm update

by Akash Srivastava @ Akash Srivastava

Penguin 4.0, the real-time algorithm is finally rolling out! Every year Google changes its algorithm nearly 500 times and in most of the cases, the changes are minor. This time, Google rolled out a major update that affects search engine ranking in a number of way.  For online marketers, these updates are essential as they help them know the ranking criteria and improve search engine optimization (SEO). Google has officially confirmed its fourth major release penguin 4.0, which goes real-time. This new version is the long awaited Penguin that gives site owners real-time information, if they are negatively impacted by Penguin. As this is a real time algorithm, there is no confirmation from Google regarding future updates. Want to know more about penguin 4.0 updates? Here is what you need to know about the latest updates – Penguin to become real-time now Initially, penguin was designed with the purpose of capturing websites that spam Google search results, as Google’s regular spamming systems failed to detect all. Google introduced penguin in 2012, and used it only on periodic basis. Penguin would filter and catch spammy sites. However, it used to take months to de-spam the websites until the next time Penguin is used. In October 2014, Google updated Penguin algorithm (Penguin 3.0), based on which the sites (hit by penguin 3.0) have to wait for nearly 2 years to be free. According to Google, webmasters need not to worry about those long delays, as the latest release of Penguin has become real-time. The web pages will be assessed by Penguin filter, as Google re-crawls and re-indexes the pages. Penguin 4.0 catches the pages and frees them, as a part of regular process. The data is refreshed in real-time, as a result of which changes are visible faster. As Penguin 4.0 is...

Google removed nearly 1.75 billion websites from search results

by Akash Srivastava @ Akash Srivastava

Google received nearly 75 million copyright takedown requests to keep pirate websites out of reach of search results, earlier in March 2016. The rate at which the requests are growing astonishes the company. The overall amount of copyright requests is seen to increase by 53% year by year. To handle these requests, Google started processing more than 1, 00,000 URLs per hour. In this regard, Google removed nearly 1.75 billion websites from Google search results by the time I am writing this. The exact number can be confirmed from the copyright section of Google’s transparency report. Based on this report, nearly 40 million copyright takedown requests have been rejected by Google. This is only 21% of the total requests submitted to Google. You can also track down the takedown requests, invalid URLs, pending URLs, duplicated URLs and more. You can also see how many requests are made for a particular domain. According to Google’s report, more than 20 million requests were duplicates; 1.75 billion websites have been removed, while 888K domains have been affected.  The majority of takedown requests are legitimate URLs.   But, do you know how does Google detect pirates? If there is a copyright infringement happening, there is a way out called Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) “takedown” requests that help Google to detect pirates. Copyright takedown request is not the proof of copyright infringement, but merely an allegation. These requests can be filed by anyone.  Google evaluates the requests and removes the content, if deemed valid. Google sends a notification to the owner of these sites, based on which the owner can file a counter-notification.  The counter-notification can either be in the form of justification or argument or removing the offending content. Based on the counter-notification, Google decides whether to add back the page to Google...

Google finally decided to remove sitelinks demotion feature

by Akash Srivastava @ Akash Srivastava

Google has finally decided to remove the sitelinks demotion tool, which was added to the search console back in 2007. This was considered as one of the best webmaster tools that allow webmasters to remove specific URLs from showing up in search result snippets. This feature has been shut off.   What are sitelinks? Basically, sitelinks are the links found in Google search results under search result snippets. The link structure of your website is analyzed to find shortcuts that will save time of user, allowing them to find information quickly. Google added sitelink demotion feature to search console with the purpose of allowing webmasters to demote specific URLs from showing up in search snippets. Today, Google said that they are removing this feature to make things easier. Google algorithm has changed a lot and got much better in the recent years. Whether in terms of finding, creating or showing relevant sitelinks, Google has become much better. So, it’s time to remove a few features to simplify things. Google decided internally to remove sitelinks demotion feature. It is a great surprise for webmasters who used this feature till now. From now, Google will be showing links only if it thinks the links are beneficial for users. If the structure of your site does not allow Google to find good sitelinks, they won’t be shown. The best way to influence sitelinks is same as other webpages. Earlier, Google listed three best practices for webmasters – If webmasters want to remove a page from search results completely, use “noindex” Meta tag. Allow google to crawl and index important webpages Provide clear structure of your website using relevant anchor texts and internal links Leave your comments about what you feel about this move!

6 Reasons SEO is Still an Effective Technique

by Akash Srivastava @ Akash Srivastava

SEO has become a widely adapted marketing strategy. But, the changing landscape of digital marketing gave raise to question – is SEO still an effective marketing strategy? Based on my personal experience, I still believe that SEO is effective for a number of reasons. In earlier days, the main objective of SEO is to identify the keywords that are relevant to your business. There used to be 5-6 keywords that were considered as golden keywords. SEO made it easier for search engines to find high-quality content. The key point of finding quality content is to help customers get answers to the questions that lead to a business outcome or product purchase. There is a misconception among people that SEO is not as effective as before and is dead. However, digital marketers and SEO consultants still believe that SEO is effective and helps in driving huge traffic to your website. A good SEO strategy is quite beneficial and effective in generating huge traffic. Many people ask me how much time it takes for SEO to work effectively. The question is born from understanding that SEO was very effective once, but is not now. There has been a lot of controversy around whether SEO is effective or not. Those who observe online marketing tactics say that it is content that drives traffic and not SEO. However, to make a mark on search engine results, both SEO and high-quality content should exist in harmony. Here are a few reasons why SEO is still effective and plays an important role in enhancing the visibility of websites. Search engines are changing their algorithm for better There are a number of things that affect the SEO rankings such as – excess keyword stuffing, spamming, low-quality content etc. The new algorithm of search engines has improved the...

Twitter Has Changed 140-Character Limit in a Few Ways

by Akash Srivastava @ Akash Srivastava

The long wait is over – Twitter came up with a solution for those who feel cramped in their tweets. After a series of rule revisions, twitter service has become much easier to use. Twitter has changed the 140 character limit in a few ways. Based on these rules, the media content like – videos, photos, Quote Tweets no longer eat your 140 character count. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey announced these changes earlier this year. However, the new changes are delayed as he wants the developer community to adapt these changes. He says, – this is one of the biggest priorities for this year to make the service much simpler. Twitter has noticed a stagnant user growth, which has been worrying the CEOs. It even led to rumors that Twitter is looking for an acquirer. The purpose of 140 character limit is to make Twitter easy to use. People have been speculating that Twitter is trying to gain a little traction with user base by increasing its character limit. There is also a rumor that Twitter might offer a 10,000 character limit. Though Twitter doesn’t made huge changes, this is going to give more power to users to drive conversations. Want to know more about what’s happening? Here are the full details of the changes – Media attachments such as photos, videos, GIFs, polls, vines and other things will no longer have impact on the 140 character count. This means, users will have more room for words. When users reply publicly, @names won’t either count anymore. This will make it easier and give additional room for users to indulge in straight-forward conversations. Earlier, this was very hard on character limit when replying to multiple users simultaneously. Twitter enabled retweet button using which users can easily retweet or quote their tweet,...
