Marketers love talking about brands. We’re sort-of obsessed with them, actually. When planning marketing strategies for our clients, usually the first thing we talk about is brand. When we talk about branding in marketing, we mean more than a brand name or a logo. Today, branding is a much broader concept, essentially covering everything that defines and identifies your brand: design, messaging, values, actions and more. Most businesses are comfortable with their brands, but many struggle to build and extend them to digital platforms. What’s worrying is that brands often need to be stronger online than offline. First, you face greater, more varied competition online. Secondly, it’s easier for users to search for brands they like (and avoid those they don’t). Also, digital marketing channels offer many more opportunities for two-way communication than traditional physical channels do. Start With What You Know If you want to strengthen your online brand, first write a list of what you already know about your brand, including: Core values Design approach and colour scheme Your USPs Your target market(s) Start to think about how you can extend these elements online. Do Your Research It’s always a good idea to carry out a competitor analysis to see how other businesses fare in terms of online branding. Your online brand needs to stand apart from your competitors. On the surface, search engine optimisation (SEO) is simple: it’s a set of processes and practices that a brand or individual uses to try to shoot their website to the top of the Google search results page (SERP) for certain keywords. The difference between whether your business ranks first, second, third (or lower) for certain search queries is huge: research suggests that sites ranked in position one get 33% of the traffic, compared with 18% in position two and 11% in position three. You don’t want your competitors to be ranked above you! Sadly, many brands still see SEO as a dark art that’s either incomprehensible or incredibly expensive to pursue – with no guaranteed results. The next time a marketing company or SEO agency approach you with a tempting SEO offering, make sure they aren’t using outdated methods! These old methods are no longer effective – and might even see your site penalised by Google… #1 Keyword stuffing ‘If you’re after a builder in Norwich, contractor in North Norfolk or a trusted local builder near Norwich, you can trust North Norfolk Building Services…’ That sentence isn’t pretty to read, is it? It’s clear to readers that this sentence isn’t entirely natural. It’s been filled with keywords: ‘builder in Norwich’, ‘contractor in North Norfolk’, and ‘trusted local builder near Norwich’. This is an example of keyword stuffing. These keywords aren’t being used for the benefit of the reader, but in an attempt to trick Google into ranking the page highly. […]

I decided to write this post after having a few friends ask me about how to rank their website. They wanted to rank for terms that I thought were fairly easy to rank for. Their sites were preventing them from ranking for the terms, so there was no need for some backlinks (yet). I took the experiment (turned it into a case study of sorts) and decided to walk through exactly what I did. I could definitely say that the results have been fantastic overall!

They had one main site that we focused on. It was in the “Selling To Real Estate Agents” space. That meant theirs was a niche, specific to them.
