5 Social Media Marketing Blunders

by Dani Sheller @ OnWired

In the world of Marketing, it’s often easy to tout oneself as a “Social Media Guru.”  You post a few cat videos, get over 50 likes then, boom.  You quickly find yourself posting for your friend’s homemade jewelry Facebook page.  It sounds simple, and it means extra time spent scrolling the news feed.  However, in actuality, Social Media Marketing is much more than post and go. In this article, we’ll talk about a few blunders many of us have made (and learned from) and how you can learn from our mistakes.    Social Media Marketing without a plan.  Many companies have experienced this and it’s likely you have, too.   It all starts with someone telling you social media is the way of the future (it is, by the way).  You hop on, start an account for your business page and fill it with great information and photos.  Your friends and loyal patrons want to support you, so they throw a like on your new page.  After the first couple weeks of your launch, you find you page is a wasteland of followers, confused as to why they followed you.  Your social media presence is now a failure. The Fix:  Before you even set up a Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, have a brainstorming session.  Sit down and think about what message you want your followers and potential customers to grasp.  Are you looking for conversions, reach, engagement, or all of the above?  Creating a content calendar is also helpful and helps you track what posts you’ve seen success on.    Posting Irrelevant Links/Articles. As of now, robots haven’t taken over social media.  This means humans are still controlling the content and materials we see across the different platforms.  In turn, some posts are irrelevant to your followers.  We get it; you see a cute dog photo and you want everyone to enjoy it as you did. The Fix:  Ask yourself what value it adds to your followers prior to posting.  Outside of posting for holidays or special occasions, if it adds no relevant value and does not promote your business, don’t post it.  Ignoring Your Target Audience.  This is one of the most important pieces of a successful social media campaign.  You can post relevant content that is well thought out and planned, but if you don’t know your target market, it’s useless. The Fix: Do some research on your current or past customers and try to find trends. In Addition, checking out what your competitors are doing can be just as helpful.  Finally, trial and error is your friend.  Try establishing a small budget for “test” purposes and use It to target different demographics.  Analyze the results to find out which demographics were most responsive to your post.  Not Responding To Reviews.  Have you ever posted a review on social media and received a response from the business?  Feels pretty great, doesn’t it?  Now, think of the opposite:  Your customer posts a review (negative or positive) only to be met with no […]

Meetup Recap: Social Selling Masterclass

by Tony Chester @ OnWired

As I’m becoming more active within the local Raleigh/Durham community, I thought it would be nice to share the benefits of local Meetups. This one in particular was sponsored by a friend of mine and marketing extraordinaire, Cole Watts. His Triangle Marketing Club provides very insightful data and entertaining speakers. Tonight for instance, we enjoyed the marketing and sales savvy of the talented Lindsey Boggs. From the event page: Join us in May as Lindsey Boggs, Social Selling Expert, explains the who, what, and why of selling and marketing in a very social world. Recently named a “World’s Top Sales Professional” by LinkedIn, Lindsey will provide intel on sales prospecting tactics that will help your response rate increase significantly. Lindsey has presented to companies across the country including Oracle, NetSuite, InterContinental Hotel Groups, Brocade, SparkPost, SkillSurvey, and many other companies. Lindsey is known as a Social Selling Expert and hence the title of the Meetup… Social Selling Masterclass If you’re in the sales & marketing game or a business owner, that title is intriguing indeed. This is why I found myself ponied up to the makeshift bar within the gracious hosts HQ — The Knowledge Tree, Inc. On tap was Agave Cream Ale, Wheelhouse India Pale Ale, and Sweet Stout provided by Compass Rose Brewery. If you’re curious, I had the Cream Ale and it was delicious. Eight Cream Ale’s later, Cole’s pulling Lyft up on my phone and that’s the end of this blog. I kid, I kid. I kept it to just one son. So What Did I Learn LinkedIn has a thing called ‘Social Selling Index’ (SSI). Your Social Selling Index (SSI) measures how effective you are at establishing your professional brand, finding the right people, engaging with insights, and building relationships. Check what your SSI is: http://linkedin.com/sales/ssi – it only hurts for a second. It’s Harder Saying No to a Person It’s easier for potential clients to say no to an email than if they know you a bit. Direct them to your LinkedIn bios, personal pages, anything that gets them to see you and get to know you a bit. You’ll improve your chances of getting that yes. The ABC’s of Selling Have Changed It’s no longer ‘always be selling’, oh wait, that’s ‘always be closing’. The new name of the game is… Always Be Connecting. If It Feels Weird, You’re Probably Doing It Right Think and act outside the box. Stand out from the crowd with unique voicemails, snazzy crafted emails, and even how you present yourself. Here’s a quick story that comes to mind: Not too long ago we received a lead from a sexy swimsuit company. After a few attempts to reach the sender with no luck, I decided to be different. My next email subject was: “You don’t want this to happen, trust me”, followed up with a threat of showing up in one of their skimpy suits if they didn’t respond. I got a response after 3 unsuccessful attempts. Back to the event. We learned about the […]

Responsive Design Must Go

by Tony Chester @ OnWired

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a website killer. He exists in the form of mobile devices. I touched on this subject with ‘The Death of Web Design’ where I briefly mentioned that mobile devices are becoming the go-to device of choice. Today we are expanding on the fact that more and more people are simply using their phones more than their computers. The Myth About Mobile I was a victim as well. People are not starting on mobile devices and then moving to their desktop/laptop for further investigation. You see, I did a brief stint at a local marketing firm known as Netsertive. While there I was spouting this exact thing and continued to preach it to our clients until yesterday. Yesterday changed my mind. Yesterday I watched a BigThink video from Mollie Spilman on the subject of “The PC Is Dead — Smartphones Are the New Consumer Economy”. When it was over, I began researching the subject in more depth. Mollie says… We are in the age of mobile now and it’s only going to continue. I think this is the single biggest change to marketing that we’ve seen in a very long time and it all comes back to consumer behavior. … over 40 percent of all transactions digitally are on a smartphone. And that, like that statistic is really high because I think even now people have this myth that consumers are shopping and browsing on their phones and browsing on their tablets, but still buying on a tablet or a PC. That’s not what’s happening. It’s actually the reverse. Does This Mean Mobile First While Designing a Website The way people shop and our obsession with our mobile leashes has changed the face of marketing. We are already purchasing more and more from our phones than from our computers as the data shows. Does this mean mobile first? I don’t think so. The pattern that has been set and consumers are doing the ‘device shuffle’. You know, driving to work listening to Rush in the wee morning hours. He mentions a wall and you decide to Google “how many Mexicans would it take to build a wall across the border”. Bam, off to the first search result. You look up just in time to swerve around the 9 year olds exiting the school bus. Looking back at your screen, you notice an ad from Ace Hardware telling you they’ve got 15% off some Quikrete Portland Cement! You think to yourself… “how annoying that they give me ads based on what I’m reading, who would click those?!”… … So you’re on AceHardware.com now trying determine why this cement mix is named “Portland” in the first place. You’ve arrived at work and continue this fascinating research on your PC. The boss walks in and it’s the browser tab shuffle; better continue this research from home on the iPad. That my friends was the ‘device shuffle’. (Note: not to offend any Trump fans, but it seemed like a relevant topic 😉 ) Responsive Design […]

3 Signs Your SEO Sucks

by Dani Sheller @ OnWired

Small business owners are the wizards of DIY work.  Need to fix a copy machine?  Nobody owns copy machines anymore; throw it out the window and go to Kinkos.  That was a bad example, but as a small business owner, you know you’re frugal when it comes to certain everyday items you need completed.  That has somehow extended to Do-It-Yourself SEO. Your first mistake is thinking you know anything about Search Engine Optimization; you don’t, and it’s hard.  As someone who tried to do the “DIY” SEO before understanding the complexities and the underlying analytics that go along with it, I can assure you it’s not for the faint of heart. With that said, many business owners believe “SEO Specialists” are snake-oil touting scam artists.  We don’t disagree, and some of them are.  But, a majority of the companies who offer SEO services have trained specialists, not the ones using a Do-It-Yourself SEO method you’ve already attempted – and failed at.   Like with anything you spend your money on, do your research and interview a few companies before choosing one. So, here’s three ways you can figure out if your SEO is working for or against you:  Your SEO is outdated.   When you decided to optimize your website, you were on a coffee-fueled excursion to first-page land and nothing could stop you.  You worked to generate keywords that were industry specific and ranked high on organic searches.  After arbitrarily sprinkling in keywords on different pages throughout your site, you called it a “win” and never checked up on it again. Search Engine Optimization is a shape-shifting beast that is constantly changing to keep up with consumers’ searches.  It is a full time job that requires a multitude of considerations.  Outfitting your pages with different keywords instead of having pages with the same keywords (ultimately pitting your site’s pages against each other instead of your competitors) is important. You also have to ensure the keywords you’re using are industry specific and ones that consumers are using.  Instead of writing solely for Search Engines, make sure you’ve taken into consideration that you’re also writing for everyday people looking for your products or services.  Your Metrics Aren’t Up to Speed. Ensuring you have a good metrics and analytics tracking in place (we’d recommend Google Analytics) is just as essential as having good SEO.   If you notice low average time on your site, high bounce rates, or folks only visiting one page on your site, it’s likely that your SEO strategy isn’t working for you. You’re Expecting Overnight Results (And Not Seeing Them).  In a world where you can have millions of cat pictures in .3 seconds, instant gratification is at an all time high.  We get it, you’re impatient.  However, even the best SEO strategy isn’t going to garner you overnight results. Organic rankings are cultivated with a kickass strategy developed through research, understanding consumer behavior, a strong grasp of the search engine’s process, and metrics/analytics.  You can’t have one without the other, […]
