How to identify low quality pages on your website
by Oliver Neely @ Elvin Web Marketing
Fri Sep 15 06:20:22 PDT 2017
Quality. With Google, it is always about quality. Google wants to show the best, most reliable and helpful web pages every time someone enters a search query. When someone clicks on a link in the search results, Google wants them to find what they’re looking for. Such a page may receive a high quality score from Google. If a web page is deemed to be of “high quality” it is far more likely to appear nearer the top than one of “low quality”. Often Google must sift through thousands, if not millions, of pages to determine which page offers the most “value” to the searcher. What does Google deem as ‘high quality”? Some of the factors are spelling and grammar, general readability, relevance to the topic and other factors less obvious to the rest of us. Low quality pages can reflect negatively on the site as a whole. In terms of SEO, low quality pages can be valueless. It pays to ensure that your individual pages avoid low quality rankings. Each page you have could be an SEO opportunity and a potential source of traffic. Attributes of a high-quality page: Here are a few things to consider when building your page Unique content – Refrain from copying large swathes of text from other pages on your website. This is doubly true about copying parts of pages from other websites on the internet. Besides a possible violation of copyright laws, your page is sure to be deemed low quality. Links to the page – Links from external sources are a high metric of a high-quality page. It shows that the page offers enough value to be referenced by another website. Links from trustworthy websites – The higher the quality of the page that is linking to you, the more valuable the link. For example, a link from forbes.com would be a much more trustworthy source than an small independent blog. Does the page solve a problem? – Google tries to determine if the searchers query was answered by your page. Other Quality factors Google looks for: Well written content – Google’s technology is very sophisticated at reading the structure and readability of content on web pages. Accessibility – Does your page work just as well on Internet Explorer as it does on Chrome? Does the page resolve itself well on mobiles and tablets? Load time – Does the page load in a reasonable amount of time? E.g. less than 2-3 seconds. Good amount of content – Low quality or “thin” pages are often determined by lack of content, a good rule of thumb is to always aim for a minimum of 300-400 words per page. Internal links – Links from other pages on your website show the page is important and helps to distribute page authority. Reviewing Your Site for Page Quality Here is a breakdown of steps to take when reviewing the quality of your web pages. Does the page have backlinks Does the page have any internal links […]

Does Your Web Designer Know SEO?
by Oliver Neely @ Elvin Web Marketing
Thu May 11 02:28:44 PDT 2017
When designing a new website or bringing life to an old one, eye catching visuals and something that represents your brand are key. A website should clearly show what it is you do and encourage people to take action, whether that’s give you a call or fill a form on your site. That’s all very well if you have traffic coming to your website, but if you’re building a company website for the first time, can you guarantee a constant influx of traffic? Businesses know they need a company website to compete in today’s digital world, but many of them stick at just that. They build the website, but they don’t do much with it after that. If your web designer knows SEO they can optimize the website at the same time as developing it, at least then if you do nothing else after the site is up you have a little more chance of being discovered. Web Designers Don’t Always Know About SEO… There are plenty of web designers who know little or nothing of SEO. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it means that you may have a harder chance of being seen from the off. Search engine optimization can take some time to take effect, so it pays to get ahead of the game as soon as possible. Being mindful of SEO in the design process can save you both time and money in fixing the problems in the future. Fancy Websites Doesn’t Mean Search Engine Friendly A website might look great but looking good doesn’t necessarily mean search engine friendly. For example websites with un-optimized images will be slow to load, something which Google frowns upon. If text is displayed in an image, search engines won’t be able to read it, and as such determine what your site is about. These are just some of the factors that designers need to consider when building your website. Simple SEO Should be a Standard Part of Web Design Basic SEO should be something of standard when building a website, making SEO friendly URL’s, space to add keyword rich text etc and heading titles are essential facets of creating a website that gets seen in the search engines. It doesn’t take long to make these changes, and any good website developer should be making these changes as part of the development process. When hiring a designer to create your company website, it is a good idea to ask about their SEO knowledge. Does their service include any SEO? If you use a full service digital marketing agency you can expect they will offer both SEO and web design and have knowledge of both.

Site Speed Versus Responsive Design
by John Moffitt @ Elvin Web Marketing
Tue Aug 29 12:27:46 PDT 2017
Is there a trade off between responsive design and site speed? People are using their mobile devises to search the internet more and more. Over half of all web searches are now conducted on a mobile devise and businesses haven taken notice. Most websites nowadays are built on a responsive design platform. Responsive design allows websites to adjust to the device they’re being displayed on. It greatly enhances the visitor experience. But many believes it has a negative effect on site speed. Is there a trade off? It begs a question. Do websites look great if nobody sees them. According to Crescentek “42% of users leave a website that takes more than 3 seconds to load”. If responsive design slows down a website too much, is the loss of visitors too big of a price to pay for a wonderful experience once you do land on a website? What can you do to mitigate the loss of traffic to your website? Here are five steps you can take to increase your site speed on mobile devises. Minify CSS, JavaScript, and HTML. There is a lot of unnecessary code in most websites. You can dramatically increase your site speed by optimizing your code. Remove spaces, commas and other unnecessary characters. Google has several suggestions on how to do this on their developers page. Leverage browser caching. Retrieving data over the web is time consuming. It may take several round trips between the client and server to render a page. When a server returns a response, it sends two heads, cache control and ETag. Cache control signals how and for how long an individual response can be cached by the browser. For performance purposes, the best result is a result that doesn’t have to travel through a server. By storing a local copy in your browser, you can eliminate that step. You can learn more about caching here. ETag sends a revalidation token to the browser to check if resources have been changed since the last request was received. Use gzip compression. Gzip is a method of compressing files for quicker network transfers. According to Yahoo “Gzip is the most popular and effective compression method currently available and generally reduces the response size by about 70%. Approximately 90% of today’s Internet traffic travels through browsers that claim to support gzip”. Gzip is a code that is attached to the .htaccess file. You can access your .htaccess file through the file manager on your server. Reduce the size of “above the fold” content. If the amount of data exceeds a certain amount, it may require additional round trips between the server and the users’ browser. For users on mobile networks, this can result in quite a delay in loading. To enable a page to load faster, limit the size of the data. This includes HTML markup, images, CSS and JavaScript. Using CSS rather than images can speed your page along. BuildaModule has some clever ideas about how to go about this. Accelerated Mobile Pages. […]

How Securing Your Website Could Result in a Ranking Boost
by Oliver Neely @ Elvin Web Marketing
Mon Jun 19 08:38:48 PDT 2017
In the past SSL certificates were used mainly by large e-commerce organizations who conduct thousands of online sales every day. However SSL certificates are now being used by businesses of all sizes to keep their customers data safe and indicate an increased level of trust. More than 43% of small businesses targeted by hackers The threat from cybercrime is not going away any time soon, in fact they’re on the rise with a dramatic rise in attacks over the 5 years. One study by security experts Symantec’s in 2015 found that small businesses were being targeted in attacks 43% of the time, up from just 18% in 2011. Google wants to reward businesses with secure websites Google is the starting point for most people when using the internet, they want to direct people to trustworthy websites that are going to keep their customers information safe. As such over the past few years Google has been taking steps to encourage greater adoption of web security among website owners. Google added HTTPS to the list of ranking factors in 2014, meaning that websites with an SSL certificate would receive a small ranking boost. However evidence suggests that Google is pushing HTTPS even more and the benefit of having an SSL certificate could increase. What is HTTPS? HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure – HTTPS is a secure version of HTTP, the protocol used to communicate information between the user and the web server. The S indicates a level of security so that all communications between the web browser and the business website are secure. And what about SSL? SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer – In essence, SSL allows for a private “conversation” just between the two intended parties. An SSL certificate authenticates the websites identity and tells users their information is being secured. HTTPS Adoption is on the rise… More and more businesses are moving over to HTTPS, not just for the ranking boost but to secure their web properties against the ever growing threats from cyber criminals. A recent study by Moz indicates that as many as 50% of page one results are secured with https. An increase of 20% on the previous study conducted in 2016. This could be that more websites with HTTPS are being rewarded with higher rankings, or that there are simply more websites with HTTPS, perhaps both. Who needs an SSL certificate? If you collect any information from a form such as name, email, phone number etc.. your website should have an SSL certificate. If you sell anything on your website and collect payment information an SSL ceritificate is a must. How can I Buy an SSL Certificate? You may be able to buy a certificate from your web domain registrar or web host. Alternatively you can use another provider such as Namecheap. You don’t need to be a large corporation to afford an SSL certificate. They can usually be picked up from $50 per year upwards. For your average small business that […]

Thu Apr 20 04:41:14 PDT 2017
Most businesses know that they need to be registered with Google my Business to be visible to their local audience across Google’s services. However depending on the experience level with SEO, you may fill in your hours, phone number and basic information and leave it at that. When it comes to competing for local search real estate, there are a lot of factors that can make a difference. Just one of those factors is the use and optimization of images. In Google’s eyes, images help to show that your business is a legitimate organization. It shows off some of your business personality and helps to increase trust, putting a face to a name as such. It is little surprise that Google rewards businesses that include more images (and higher quality ones) on their GMB profile. Having several, relevant images in your listing will help your business to stand out from the crowd, achieve higher rankings and attract attention. How to add the right images to your business You can update the images on your Google my Business profile by visiting https://business.google.com, choosing the appropriate business and selecting the “photos” tab. At very least your listing should include: A profile photo A cover photo Business logo Ideally your profile should include at least 5 images of your products/services/team or business premises. Images are categorized as: By owner By customer At work Interior Exterior Product Team Identity (logo/branding etc..) If you are a retail store you might take a picture of the front of your building, the owner and some of the staff, as well as displays of your products. If you are a landscaper you could upload pictures of completed projects. If you fix cars you might take a photo of your staff working on a vehicle. It’s easy to say: “I have no images”, “there aren’t any relevant pictures I can take”. This simply isn’t true! With a little creativity you can find something to add. Whether people are interested in the photo or not, having something that shows you are a real, is better than looking at a blank business profile. Looking for an easy, quick solution? While it is not entirely “true to life” if you absolutely have nothing to put on your listing, you can settle for stock photos or pictures from the web. How does your business stack up? It is worth looking at your Google my Business insights to get an idea of how you stand against your competitors. It may be that your competitors have few photos in which case it shouldn’t be difficult to stand out. Conversely you may have none and they may have dozens. The Google my Business insights also show how many times your photos have been viewed by searchers: Google has published some guidance on uploading images to your Google my Business profile. If you’re stuck for ideas or want to see what they say you may wish to take a look.

What is Google Posts & What Can It Do for You?
by Oliver Neely @ Elvin Web Marketing
Wed Jun 28 06:25:08 PDT 2017
Google posts makes it quick and easy to display custom text, video, images and events next to your Google business listing. The feature is exclusive for businesses with a local listing on Google maps/places. Where does a Google post appear? Your post is shown with your business information when someone searches your business name, and beneath your listing people select your business from Google maps. Sure people are only going to see your post if they explicitly search or click on your business from a list of others, but having some sort of special offer, event or call to action can significantly increase the likelihood of closing a sale. You are in control of your content! Almost any business can benefit from using Google posts in one way or another. The best thing about it is that you are completely in control. Before Google posts came along, you were slightly limited as to what you could include on your Google my Business listing: Phone number Address Some images Opening hours Not much more… Engage with your customers direct from the search results With Google posts, you can send a message to your customers, engage with them and bring across a little personality. It can be hard to achieve that with some basic information about your business. You can say or promote almost anything you want! Then direct them to a page or opt-in of your choosing (should you wish). It is important to note that there is no option for people to comment on your posts. How can I create a Google post? If you are eligible you can create a Google post from within your Google My Business account. Visit: http://www.google.com/business Select your business Select “posts” from the menu You can add an image, video, up to 300 words of text and your choice of button, including: Reserve, sign up, buy and get offer buttons. Examples of Google posts Promote special offer Inform customers about special hours Introduce new product range Link customers to a specific product or service you want to promote Direct customers to your e-mail signup form. Tell people about an event Let us know what you think of Google posts in the comments below. Why not give it a try for yourself?

Social Media Marketing – How to Turbocharge your Startup’s Campaign?
by John Moffitt @ Elvin Web Marketing
Fri Jan 20 08:49:08 PST 2017
How a start up can leverage a social media marketing campaign When it comes to social media marketing, startups, especially those that are operating on a limited budget, can use all the help they can get. A well run social media campaign can help a new business drum up interest, generate customers, and make sales. Social media offers an avenue for startups to capture some space in the minds of their audiences and from there make their way to their wallets. Startups have an important advantage. They are run by people like you and me. Fundraising sites for startups work because people like new ideas, and if a good concept deserves encouragement, people don’t hold back. It’s like rooting for the underdog. This is something that should be take advantage of. If your startup is based on a concept that will help society or maybe even take civilization forward, social profiles that engages your audience at a human level can deliver huge benefits. On any social media platform, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Tumblr, your profile should accurately reflect your startup’s philosophy. Here, you can also add relevant photos to position your brand, location, and website URL. This done, you’re ready to build a following. Have a content marketing plan ready. But if you’re pressed for time, you can develop one on the go. Share updates about your startup’s progress. Share relevant content from your industry. Keep an eye out for content that highlights the need and benefits of a service and product like the one you’re planning to debut. Launch contests and conduct quizzes. These are great rapport-building and information-generating tools. Stoke interest and encourage sales by offering early bird prizes to those that register for the launch. Build the nucleus of your social network by inviting your email contacts to connect on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Instagram and Skype prompt you to invite your Facebook contacts. These contacts can then open the doors for you to reach out to many others. Many of your immediate contacts may be powerful influencers on social media and can effortlessly market your startup much more effectively that what paid ads may achieve. Use the search features on social media to find out those that fit the profile you’re targeting. Connect with them. Each social media platform has its own unique features. Twitter leads the rest when it comes to real-time engagement and harnessing the communicative powers of the hashtag. Facebook has the most number of users, and Facebook pages are powerful communication mediums in their own right. Let people know that you have a presence on social media. Direct them to your social media pages via icons on your website and email link signature. If you’re doing some offline promotions, use the opportunity to tell people about your social media pages. LinkedIn groups are forums for exchanging ideas and the members are subject matter experts and opinion influencers. Remember, these are things to do before your business goes live. Such social media marketing […]

Off Season SEO for Local Businesses
by Oliver Neely @ Elvin Web Marketing
Wed Mar 01 05:01:38 PST 2017
Landscapers, swimming pool service companies, golf courses, ski resorts. What do they all have in common? Their businesses and activity is dictated by the season. Each of these businesses, and others, have entire months when business is not coming in. In terms of online marketing, what steps should a seasonal business take to leverage the downtime in the off season and to maximize profits when business is in season? Unfortunately, many owners of a seasonal business don’t do much at all. They exhale deeply after a long and busy season is concluded. They start to look forward to well-deserved downtime. A lot of small businesses hire only seasonal employees with the goal being to raise enough cash to hold them through the off-season. This strategy works for a few but most SBO’s don’t have nearly enough cash to winter in Florida or Arizona, never mind the more exotic locales many of us dream about. So, what can a seasonal small business do in their downtime to improve their chances of success? Well, just like many of the most successful sports franchises, successful small businesses work hard in the off-season to get ready for the year coming up. When it comes to online marketing, and Google in particular, your biggest gains will be made in the off-season.. Steps a seasonal small business should take in the off-season Take Advantage of the “off-season” If you start thinking about SEO just as your season is starting, you’re already too late. Improving your search engine rank isn’t an overnight job, it can take weeks if not months to jump from a position on the second page to the 1st to 3rd spot. Your website needs to be search engine optimized months before people begin searching for you. Remember, your business may be closed but the internet is open 24/7. Whether your lights are on or not, Google, Bing and the other search engines are stopping by your site (crawling your site) and ranking it. Search Engines Don’t have an “Off Season” Businesses that have run successful SEO campaigns in the past and profited from them may be tempted to take a break for a little while. Even from ongoing maintenance work. This action may be tempting, BUT DON’T TAKE THAT BREAK! It won’t be long before you start seeing a dip in your rankings and you may not be able to recover before your season is in full swing. Google and other search engines are continuously looking for fresh website updates, articles, images, blogs along with other offsite or daily social media activity. Taking time off will have an effect. You shouldn’t fool yourself that it won’t. Did you know that having an active Facebook page has shown to have a direct effect on local search rankings? However it’s not just enough to post once or twice every week, the most successful businesses post every few days, if not daily. Focus on Your Website’s content In the thick of the […]

Does Your Website Have a Form? Get an SSL Certificate
by John Moffitt @ Elvin Web Marketing
Tue Aug 22 10:26:23 PDT 2017
In October, Google will start labeling web pages without an SSL certificate as untrustworthy. According to an article in Search Engine Land, Google will start to label a web page having a form but not an SSL certificate is untrusted by Google. This is part of Google’s ongoing campaign to characterize HTTP as unsecured and untrustworthy. Many small business owners don’t believe the expense and hassle of adding an SSL certificate to their website is worth it. Worse than that, many business owners are unaware of the difference between HTTP and HTTPS and don’t realize the potential loss of business down the road if action is not taken. The fix is to migrate your website to HTTPS format. Here’s how it’s done. You must contact your website’s hosting organization. Many companies have their domain domiciled at one company, GoDaddy for example, but host the website elsewhere. An SSL certificate is a text file that is installed on the website server to encrypt communication between the site and user. The SSL certificate must originate with the hosting company. It is assigned to the domain. If you purchase another domain that you want to point to the website, a new SSL certificate must be assigned to the new domain. The old SSL cannot be transferred. The SSL certificate must be verified properly. Most hosting companies are competent and will do this for you. However, problems do arise. In March, Search Engine Watch reported that thousands of websites using Symantec were declared untrusted. According to the article “Symantec has not properly validated thousands of certificates. In fact, the Chrome team claims that an initial set of reportedly 127 [mis-issued] certificates has expanded to include at least 30,000 [mis-issued] certificates, issued over a period spanning several years.” If you have forms on your website, having an SSL certificate is a good business practice in any event. Giving your customers and visitors the added assurance that their information is protected will encourage them to interact with your site more and can lead to greater trust and more business for you down the road. SSL certificates and SEO Finally, let’s not forget another big benefit to HTTPS. It is becoming a ranking factor in SEO. How important is open to debate. But if you’re curious, do a Google search sometime, it could be for almost anything. See how many high-ranking sites are HTTPS as opposed to HTTP. That should be all the proof you need.
